Being a valid driver’s license holder is a must for driving a car in India. This is a requirement set under the Central Motor Rules, 1989.

Here is a detailed checklist regarding the process you need to follow for getting a driving license:

7 Point Checklist To Help You Get A Driving License Online

Checklist for Getting a Driving License

#1 Apply for a Learning License

In India, you can get a learning license for a four-wheeler only if you are over the age of 18 years. A learning license is one of the documents you need to submit while applying for a driving license. Thus, it is necessary that you apply for a learning license even if you know the basics of driving or if you can already drive well.

#2 Enroll at a Driving School

If you are completely new to driving, or probably the first person in the family to drive a car then enroll in a driving school. They will help you with the process of applying for a learning license by accompanying you to the RTO office. If not, you can easily apply for a learning license by yourself. Simply visit the Parivahan website and fill the necessary details.

#3 Pass an Online Exam

A criterion for issuing a learning license is that you need to pass an online test which will be conducted at the RTO office. Irrespective of the way you apply for the license i.e. online or offline, you need to pass the online test.

#4 Get Training

After you pass the online test for learning license, you will be given a period of 30 days to get a formal training in driving. This is the best time to practice. You can choose to drive on an open empty ground or a deserted patch of road. Practice how to change gears, take right and left turns, use indicators, and most importantly how to properly reverse a car. Always be accompanied by a driving license holder while practicing. If not, you will be liable to pay RTO fines.

#5 Collect Documents Required for Driving License

After 30 days, you can apply for a driving license. The process is similar to applying for a driving license. Before applying for a driving license be ready with your documents. You will require the learning license, age proof, address proof, application form, photographs, etc.

#6 Apply for a Driving License

A driving license can be applied for in two ways, i.e. online, by applying on the Parivahan website or by visiting the Regional Transport Office (RTO) yourself. Complete the process of submitting the documents and wait for the day of practical examination.

#7 Pass the Practical Exam

Just like you will receive the learning license only if you pass the online test, you will receive your driving license only if you pass the practical test. Your 30 days of practice will be put to test now. If you have thorough knowledge of driving a car, you can easily pass this test.
