How to Apply for a Driving License Online in India

The Indian government, through the Ministry of Roads Transport and Highways has enabled computerization of thousands of driving permits across many states in the country. This has not only enabled online license application but also license renewal and availing duplicate license among other related things.

This work is mainly done through the Road Transport offices which have been established all over India. The government has worked hard to ensure that every resident gets this vital government service close to their homes. This article will provide a step-by-step procedure on how to apply, renew, and get a duplicate license among other things.

Procedure On How To Get A Driving License Online

Individuals who are yet to get a driving license can apply for one online instead of going to the RTO for the same. This has been proven to be cheap in terms of both cost and time expenses. There are various requirements that one has to fulfill before being allowed to successfully apply for the license.

Requirements

  • Proof of residence
  • Three passport size photos
  • Proof of age
  • Proof of citizenship
  • Learner’s application form
  • Permanent address
  • Learner’s license
  • Certificate from a recognized driving school
  • Documents relating to the type of vehicle to operate. This might be a motorcycle, personal vehicle or transport vehicle.

After ensuring that you have all the above documents, you should go through the following procedure to apply.

Step 1: Fill online application form

The initial step is to download an online driving license application form. You can get this from the ministry’s website otherwise referred to as Sarathi website. After downloading this form, fill all the required parts which are usually marked in red color. This is only for adult applicants. As for applicants who are below 18 years, they will be required to download the form and print it first. After printing it, the form should be filled and signed by either the guardian or parents. Once the printout is filled and signed, you can upload it.

Step 2: Upload and submit other requirements.

You will be required to upload all the requirements mentioned above which include the proof of age, residence, passport photos among others. After submitting the form and other documents, you will get a registration number. You can use this number to track your license as it is being processed.

Once your application and processing has gone through, the officers in charge at the RTO will notify you via SMS or email. Once you get the notification, you can visit the road transport office near you to collect your license.

Contents of the online application form

The online application form for a driving license is divided into four parts which include the following:

Part A

This part includes the personal information of the applicant such as name, gender, date of birth, citizenship among others. It will also state the blood group, education level and type of license you want to apply for.

Part B

This part contains information relating to the type of vehicle you want to operate. As an applicant, you are allowed to list as much as 19 different types of vehicles which you want to drive. You will be required to provide a vivid description of the types of vehicles and the type of license you want.

Part C

This part includes a list of the documents being submitted together with the application form. Such documents may include proof of age, proof of residence among other documents. It will also contain information relating to the registering RTO and the date of issue.

Part D

This is where the applicant declares that he has submitted all materials as required. It may also include information such as a certificate of medical fitness, license of documents among other things.

Part E

This part contains information relating to applicants falling in the age bracket of 16 to 18 years. The parents or guardians will be required to sign as a way of authorizing the applicant to apply for a learner’s license. The guardian or parent can only sign this part in the presence of the authorizing officer.

Duplicate License

A duplicate license is a copy of your original one. There are instances when we have to get a duplicate license. There are several factors that lead to this situation. These may include loss of your driving license, when it becomes difficult to read the contents on it among other factors. As an Indian citizen, it is important to understand the procedure on how to get a duplicate copy of your license so that you continue operating. The procedure to get a duplicate is as follows:

You will need the following documents for application:

  • Details of your driving license
  • Passport size photographs
  • Proof of age
  • Address of your permanent residence
  • Application form
  • Photocopies of the license if it is lost

After confirming that you have all the above documents, follow the procedure below:

  • Fill and submit form.

Visit the ministry’s website and click on the icon with a duplicate driving license. This will lead you to an LLD form. Fill all the required parts then submit. Also, upload all the necessary documents and submit.

  • Get a printout

After submitting the documents, get a printout and attach the photographs and sign where necessary.

You will be required to personally submit the form plus any other documents to the Road Transport office where you got your original license. While applying for a duplicate license, you are not required to take a driving test again.

After submission, you will have to pay a duplicate license fee. You will be given a receipt which you will be using as a permit to operate as you wait for the duplicate to be processed. Once the duplicate has been processed and is ready, it will be sent to your permanent address.

How To Change The Permanent Address In Your License

After moving from your residential house from where you had applied your driving license, you will be required to apply for change of address to reflect the new residence. This is done via the Road transport office where you first applied your license. Before applying for the change of address, you should ensure that you have the following documents:

  • Proof of current residential address
  • Change of address form
  • Clearance certificate/no objection certificate
  • Post cover
  • Passport size photographs
  • Form number 7

You will get the clearance certificate from RTO where you got your license. Once you have gathered all the above documents, visit the nearest road transport office and present them to the officer in charge. The officer will verify to ascertain their authenticity and to also confirm that you have all the documents. You will be informed about the charges required to enable change of address to your license. After paying the fee, you will be given a receipt.

The change of address acknowledgement form shall be sent to your new residential address after a period of around 30 days.

This procedure shall apply to all Indians who have not moved from one state to another. For those who have moved from one state to another, they will be required to fill an NOC form and submit it together with the documents mentioned above.

How To Renew Your Driving License In India.

Indian law requires that once your license has expired, you have to renew it to ensure it is valid. Listed below are the documents required for renewal of your license:

  • 2 copies of your passport size photographs
  • Original license
  • Proof of residence
  • Proof of age
  • Form number 1 declaration of health fitness

You will have to present the above documents to the road transport office where you first applied for your original license. The renewal can be instant, but in some instances, it might take a little longer before you get the license.
