Driving License Renewal

It’s a must to get your driving license renewal done when its validity date expires, that is 20 years after the issuance. It should also be renewed when you are of age 50 (whichever happens first). For starting the driving license renewal process, you need to contact your nearest RTO zonal office during their office hours (9am to 5 pm).

Any licensing authority may renew a driving a driving license.

This will be done only in the case where the driving license renewal is made more than thirty days after the date of its expiry.

Documents required for Renewal of Driving License:

For Private License:

  1. A fully filled application of Form No. 9 should be submitted (A fee of INR 200 and applicable penalties should be paid)
  2. Two copies of your recent passport size photograph as well as the original license which has expired
  3. Self-Attested copies of Valid Proof of age (ID proofs such as Birth certificate, voter Id, Adhar card, pan card, passport etc) and residence(rental/ lease agreement, ration card, utility bill, passport etc.)
  4. Form No.1 which is self-declaration of physical fitness.
  5. Valid Medical Certificate in form No.1A (In case of applicants of age above 40 years).

For Commercial License:

  1. All the documents as required in Private License
  2. Valid Medical Certificate in form No.1A(Mandatory)
  3. In case of HMV, Driver refreshing Training certificate is necessary as well
  4. One day/short period of Re-Fresher Training course for all other category of Commercial vehicles is also necessary

In the event of half-filled and unclear details on your form, verification of your documents can be put on hold or delayed. The driving license renewal for private vehicles is mostly done on the same day but it is not the same for commercial vehicle driving license renewal. It takes a thorough analysis before your license will be sent to you by speed post. Any duplicate copies of documents submitted must be strictly attested by Notary Public or a Gazette Officer.

However, if the license is for a commercial, passenger or goods vehicle it must be renewed after every three years. The applicant having a commercial license, A medical certificate is required and in any other case where the applicant has attained the age of 40 years.
