The tribal region of Arunachal Pradesh with its incredible landscape is one of the must-visit tourist destinations. The rich culture and traditions of Arunachal Pradesh are upheld by both young and old in their art in the form of handicrafts, dances and local delicacies. Below are some of the famous or popular festivals of Arunachal Pradesh:
Solung of Adis: The most popular festival of Arunachal Pradesh is the Solung of Adis which is a festival based on agriculture; however, it reflects the socio-religious status of the people of the state. Devotees offer rituals for the protection from evil spirits and pray for the peace and welfare of the state and its people. During the festival, the Ponung dance is performed which is led by mythological songs.
Losar Festival: One of the major festivals of the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh, the Losar or New Year festival is celebrated during the last week of February or during early March. The festival was considered during the pre-Buddhist era as a fertility festival. People, especially farmers light incense sticks and perform rituals and offer prayers to appease their local deities. From new clothes to jewellery, people celebrate the festival with much fervour and gaiety.
Torgya of Monpas: One of the main festivals of the Monpa tribe, the Torgya festival is celebrated inside the monastery for three days for peace, general wellbeing and good health of the tribe. Monks prepare a 10-feet pyramid structure made out of flour which is called as Torgya. The main folk dance of the tribe, Appa Pat-Sun is performed by dancers which brings out the art and culture of the Monpa tribe.
Ziro Festival of Music: The younger generation of Arunachal Pradesh observes the Ziro Festival of Music. The outdoor music festival brings musicians from across the state as well as from other north-eastern states. The four-day festival is held during the month of September and one can enjoy different beats of music from across the world.
Dree Festival: The primary festival of the Apatani tribe of Arunachal Pradesh, Dree festival is an offering and a prayer by the tribe to their deities for the protection of plants from harmful insects and pests. The tribe prays to Metii deity for the protection from famine or epidemics, diety Harniang is worshipped to ensure the fertility of the land, while Danyi deity is worshipped for the prosperity and protection of the people.
