In the recent past, various taxpayers have complained to the income tax department about digital fraud attempts being made on them. Such digital fraud attempts are commonly known as phishing. These attempts are made via SMS and email and are directed towards extracting personal information from the common public. Such messages are sent from sources that pose as income tax officials.
The income tax department has sent informative emailers regarding how to tackle phishing activities. They have also installed a pop-up on their website which informs the public about the income tax department’s toll-free and contact numbers, and email IDs. These precautionary notifications speak about a common message which is about not trusting anonymous sources and not clicking on any unknown links.
If you come across any phishing activities, you should report them immediately. For example, in case you are at the receiving end of an email or an SMS in which the sender is posing as an income tax official, you should communicate the same to the income tax department. To do that, you can send the email to [email protected] or [email protected].
Here’s a list of things to note with respect to income tax communications.
The income tax department never asks for a PIN over email or SMS.
They also do not ask for any sensitive information such as passwords over email or SMS.
Do not share any kind of information concerning bank accounts, debit cards or credit cards over call, email and SMS.
Do not reply to phishing emails or click on links mentioned in such emails.
Do not download and open any attachments that come along with phishing emails.
As the income tax department communicates with taxpayers via emails, they have taken adequate precautionary measures for their email domains. These measures include Sender Policy Framework, DomainKeys Identified Mail, and Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance. Such measures help to block out phishing emails.
