Selling a car involves more than just paperwork and handover. One small but important detail often missed is the FASTag on your vehicle. Though it may look like just a toll sticker, it is linked to your personal details and payment account. If not removed or deactivated, the FASTag could continue deducting toll charges from your wallet or bank account, even after the car changes hands. Let's get to know more about it in this blog.
Every FASTag is registered to a specific vehicle number and the owner’s details. Even if you sell the car, the FASTag remains active unless you take steps to close or transfer it. The issuing bank or wallet provider does not automatically deactivate it after a vehicle sale.
A FASTag is directly linked to your bank account or digital wallet. Even if you physically remove the FASTag sticker from your windscreen, it does not deactivate the tag. If the new owner continues to use it without updating or removing it, it continues to remain linked to your bank account, and you might still be charged for tolls on a car you no longer own.
In case you forget to remove the FASTag, here is what might happen:
Before finalising the sale, check the FASTag status:
Once confirmed, contact your provider to deactivate or close the FASTag account.
It is best to remove or deactivate the FASTag before handing over the vehicle to the new owner. If you have already sold the car, contact your FASTag provider immediately to avoid future toll deductions.
Some FASTag providers allow you to update the vehicle registration number and reuse the same tag. This depends on the provider’s policy and your KYC status. In most cases, a new FASTag is issued for a new vehicle.
Removing the FASTag may seem like a small task, but it helps avoid unnecessary charges and confusion after selling your car. Once the tag is deactivated, the account is no longer linked to your vehicle or toll payments.
