Scooter insurance refers to a two-wheeler insurance plan that can cover third-party liabilities and damages to the scooter, depending on the terms and conditions of the chosen policy. For instance, a Third-party Scooter Insurance Plan (Liability-only Policy) will only cover damages to the third-party property and injury/death of a third party, while a Comprehensive Scooter Insurance Plan will offer all the benefits of the Third-party Liability Policy and cover damages to the scooter.
You get the following benefits when you buy scooty insurance policy from ACKO.
ACKO offers one of the lowest-priced bike insurance policies in the market thanks to the no-commission model and reduced operational costs. These benefits are passed on to you as discounts on bike insurance premium.
The purchase process at ACKO is super fast as we don't inspect your scooter when you buy or renew the insurance policy. Just answer a few questions related to the scooter and go through the available plans. Make the payment, and get the policy instantly!
ACKO's policyholder does not have to go through the entire claim process if the scooter has suffered minor damages. Simply tell us a few details about the damage and we will try to settle the claim within a few hours.
Following are the two main types of scooter insurance plans available at ACKO.
The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 states that all scooter owners must buy a bike insurance plan to safeguard financial liabilities related to the scooter with at least a Third-party Liability cover. This plan includes third-party property damage and injuries/death. Third-party scooter insurance also takes care of any legal liabilities arising out of an accident of the insured scooter.
The Comprehensive Scooter Insurance Policy is exhaustive; it covers damages to the insured scooter along with all the third-party liabilities. Damages due to fire, accident, theft, natural calamities, man-made calamities, total loss (damage beyond repair), etc., are covered under this plan. Even though buying a comprehensive plan is not mandated by the law, it is a good idea to get this coverage as it provides all-around insurance.
A Comprehensive Scooter Insurance Policy from ACKO covers the following situations.
Accidental damages: The policy covers damages to your scooter caused by accidents.
Fire or explosions: The Comprehensive Scooter Insurance Policy covers damages to the scooter caused by fire accidents or explosions.
Theft of the insured scooter: The policy also covers you financially if the insured scooter is stolen and cannot be found by the authorities (Police).
Total loss: If the insured scooter is damaged beyond repair, the insurance plan will cover you financially by compensating the IDV (Insured Declared Value of the vehicle) amount.
Natural or man-made disasters: The Comprehensive Scooter Insurance Policy covers damages to the scooter caused by natural calamities (flooding, earthquake, cyclone, etc.) and man-made disasters (riots, vandalism, etc.).
Third-party liabilities: The Comprehensive Policy also covers damages to third-party property/vehicles and injury/death of a third party.
Personal Accident (PA) cover: Please note that this is a coverage that you must purchase separately while buying a Comprehensive Scooter Insurance Plan. It is mandatory by law to have a PA cover. It provides coverage to the scooter owner/rider in case of disability/death. It offers coverage up to Rs. 15 lakhs.
The following situations are not covered in a Comprehensive Scooter Insurance policy from ACKO.
Regular wear and tear: The policy will not cover damages due to the regular wear and tear of scooter components.
Intentional damage: The scooter insurance will not cover damages to the scooter that are caused deliberately.
Damages caused when the insurance policy is expired: The damages to the scooter or third-party liabilities will not be covered if the insurance policy is expired or lapsed.
Electrical or mechanical damages: The insurance plan will not cover damages to the scooter caused due to electrical or mechanical failure.
Damages outside the geographical limit:If the damages to the scooter or third party are caused outside the geographical boundaries mentioned in the policy wordings, the insurance plan will not offer any coverage.
Damages due to ignoring traffic rules:If you end up damaging the scooter while disobeying the traffic rules and regulations, the insurance policy will not offer any coverage. For instance, if you damage the vehicle by jumping a red light, the insurer can reject your insurance claim.
Damages due to riding in an intoxicated state: The Comprehensive Policy will not cover scooter damages caused while riding under the influence of alcohol or any other intoxicating substances.
Damages due to illegal activity: The insurance plan will not offer coverage if you damage the scooter during an illegal activity, such as racing, overloading of vehicle, etc.
Damages caused when riding without a valid DL: The insurance policy will not cover damages to the scooter caused while riding without a valid Driving Licence.
A Premium Calculator for scooter insurance is an online tool that helps you understand the approximate amount of money you need to pay for buying bike insurance. Many insurance companies, for example, ACKO, have included a premium calculator in the purchase journey of scooter insurance.
You just have to answer a few questions related to the scooter and the type of insurance you need. The calculator will show an insurance quote. You can even tweak a few options through the purchase process and see how the quote changes. The Scooter Insurance Premium Calculator gives you an idea of how much you need to spend on bike insurance.
The following factors are taken into account while calculating the cost of a scooter insurance policy.
2. Age of the scooter
3. Insured Declared Value
4. Claim history
5. Type of bike insurance policy
6. Number of add-ons bought
The premium rates for scooter insurance are calculated by the insurance regulatory body IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India). The premiums are based on the scooter’s engine capacity. The insurance regulator revises the premium rates periodically. Here are the Third-party Scooter Insurance Premium rates with effect from April 2022.
|Scooters with engine cubic capacity (cc)||Third-party scooter insurance premium|
|Not exceeding 75cc||Rs. 538|
|Exceeding 75cc but not exceeding 150cc||Rs. 714|
|Exceeding 150cc but not exceeding 350cc||Rs. 1,366|
|Exceeding 350cc||Rs. 2,804|
