Launched in 2014, FASTag was introduced as a move to establish a unified electronic toll collection system in India. Most vehicle owners crossing toll plazas in India are likely to be familiar with the FASTag RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology. This service is typically operated by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

Most toll plazas today are equipped with FASTag, and citizens are required to enable their vehicles by buying it to pay a user fee every time they cross a toll. FASTags have a prepaid recharging mechanism, allowing automatic deduction of payment from their respective users. While these tags may not have an expiry date, ensure you recharge your FASTag periodically.

What You Need to Know About Your FASTag Monthly Limit

For FASTag users uncertain about the monthly limit, here’s what you may need to know.
While there is no minimum limit on FASTag, as per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, the maximum value and reload limit are capped at ₹10,000 for Limited KYC FASTag account holders.

As a FASTag user, you will need to keep an eye on the total funds added to your FASTag wallet during a financial year. Now, this amount is capped at ₹1,00,000 as the maximum recharge limit for owners with a “Perpetual/Minimum/Limited” KYC wallet on FASTag. The good news is that this comes with a lifetime validity.

Here’s the minimum document requirement list for your FASTag:

  • Submission of KYC details (as per the issuer bank's policy),
  • Submission of a copy of the vehicle’s RC, and a photograph of the vehicle owner.

FASTag users with a Full KYC can enjoy a maximum amount of ₹ 2,00,000 in their prepaid account. On this account form, you don’t need to worry about any specific monthly reload cap. Moreover, the minimum documents required are the same as those required for a limited KYC FASTag user. For a better understanding of the maximum recharge amount as defined by each bank, you can simply fetch details by visiting their respective website.

How Frequently Do You Need to Recharge Your FASTag?

Currently, FASTag hasn’t specified a specific frequency for recharging. You can recharge your FASTag depending on your usage rate. Whenever you spot a low balance, it's best to recharge it without delay. Although there is no set minimum balance requirement to keep your FASTag active, you can prevent a lapse in service by maintaining a balance. Simply run a quick check on your balance from time to time, especially if you are someone who frequently travels through highways.

Worried about a low running FASTag balance? Technology simplifies it via reminders and alerts over emails and texts to keep you informed on a low FASTag balance. If you are among individuals who find it challenging to track their FASTag recharging requirement, the auto-recharge feature is a saviour. You can check with your bank to learn how to activate this feature, as it makes the recharging process increasingly convenient.

You can always view your monthly statement from FASTag on the provider's website or through their mobile app to refer to your transaction history to track specific transaction time, day, date or month. Such statements can also provide details on the number of transactions and the name of the toll plaza where the deduction occurred.

Take Away

So, if you are a frequent toll road user, consider purchasing a monthly or annual pass as it can make a  reasonable deal, saving you some money while easing your toll payments.

Frequently Asked Questions
