Most vehicle owners by now are familiar with FASTag and its usage. This contactless, GPS-based payment system has made travelling through highways way easier and hassle-free, putting an end to the era of unending queues at the toll plazas. You may be aware of how FASTag works. Still, it is essential to stay updated on the latest rules introduced by the government if you wish to continue enjoying its uninterrupted services.

Recent FASTag Regulations: A Quick Glance

Here’s a brief on the recent amendments to FASTag rules.

Annual Pass

This pass concerns owners of private vehicles used for non-commercial purposes. The category includes cars, vans, and jeeps. The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways issued a circular stating the introduction of an annual pass designed exclusively for four-wheelers that don’t belong to the non-commercial category. The pass has not been issued for commercial vehicles.

The annual FASTag pass costs ₹3,000. The pass is valid for one year from its date of activation or effective until completion of 200 trips per year, whichever condition is fulfilled first.

The first option offers unlimited access through the tolls for ₹3,000. In contrast, the second option is based on the distance covered, with a charge of ₹50 per 100 km of toll roads traveled. This is a fixed rate and works best for travellers who occasionally use highways.

This yearly pass has been conceptualised to enable seamless travel for passengers commuting through highways around the year, thereby making it a cost-effective option for commuters. With an annual pass, travellers don’t have to top up their FASTag balance as frequently and can experience uninterrupted movement on toll roads.

Blacklisting and Penalties

Based on the latest guidelines rolled out by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), FASTag has started implementing stricter timelines for transactions from February 2025. The new rules allow a grace period of 70 minutes to users for recharging their accounts. Failing to adhere to the latest timelines would result in penalties such as having to pay double toll charges.

The changes in FASTag rules have streamlined toll transactions across the country and evolved as an effective mechanism to check fraud. Here is what you need to know.

  • FASTag users who are blacklisted 10 minutes before arriving at a toll booth will have to pay twice the toll charges.
  • Users will be allowed a grace period of 70 minutes before reaching a toll, within which they can recharge their FASTags and correct the blacklisted status.
  • If your transactions aren’t within 15 minutes of passing a toll, you may have to pay additional charges.
  • Refunds/chargebacks of incorrect deductions on FASTags that are either blacklisted or reflect a low balance can be elevated only after a cooling period of 15 days. This has been established to minimise errors in payment processes.
  • Every FASTag user will need to maintain an adequate balance and keep track of their balance status to avoid penalties.

Other Notable Updates

  • Every vehicle is granted only one FASTag.
  • Users must submit their updated KYC documents.
  • Inactive FASTags will have to be linked to updated information of the vehicle to prevent deactivation.
  • Users may need to maintain a minimum balance to avoid hitting zero balance and penalties thereof.
  • You could soon see auto-charging becoming compulsory.

Measures to Avoid FASTag Penalties

The simplest way to prevent FASTag penalties or blacklisting is by managing your account well. Here are a couple of tips:

  • Stay proactive: Keep yourself updated on rules, as it can help you handle your FASTag efficiently and securely, thereby averting potential denials or non-operability.
  • Maintain an adequate balance: Don’t let your FASTag wallet go dry. You can keep monitoring your transaction history. Simultaneously, cross-check if you spot any delay in deductions at toll booths.
