The installation of MH HSRP is in compliance with motor laws and ensures legal driving in the state. Read on to know more about High Security Number Plate Maharashtra.

What is a High Security Registration Plate in Maharashtra?

A High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) is a tamper-proof license plate mandated by the Indian government. It features a chromium-based Ashoka Chakra, laser-etched serial number, and is permanently fixed to your vehicle to prevent theft. The advanced safety features of the HSRP number plate make it useful to curb vehicle-related crimes such as counterfeiting, tampering, etc. Failure to install HSRP may attract a penalty of ₹1,000 to ₹10,000 under the Motor Vehicles Act.

The implementation of HSRP is part of broader road transport regulations aimed at improving vehicle safety and compliance in Maharashtra.

Law.svg

It’s a legal mandate

HSRP is a mandatory component installed on all vehicles registered in Maharashtra prior to 1st April 2019. If a motorist does not have HSRP these days, he will be fined ₹ 1,000, and even basic RTO services, such as change of ownership registration and transfer, might be denied. For instance, HSRP Pune is applicable for Pune city, and similarly for other cities in the state.

It provides enhanced security

Every HSRP comes with a unique, laser-etched serial number linked to a national vehicle database. This makes your vehicle easier to verify and prevents plate duplication or misuse. It adds an extra layer of traceability in case of theft or traffic violations.

It’s durable and tamper-proof

HSRPs use a snap-fit locking system that can’t be removed without damage. This ensures the plate stays securely in place and resists theft or tampering. Unlike traditional plates, it’s designed for one-time installation.

HSRP Maharashtra for Old Vehicles

The‍‌‍‍‌ government has made it mandatory for all cars and bikes that were registered in Maharashtra before April 2019 to upgrade to a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP). This instruction applies to all older vehicles, including private, commercial, two-wheelers, and four-wheelers.

Older number plates do not have any security features and thus can be easily tampered with. HSRP‍‌‍‍‌ is a significant step towards safer roads. It discourages attempts at tampering with number plates and helps law enforcement agencies to identify vehicles easily.

An old vehicle without an HSRP may be subject to fines under the Motor Vehicles Act. In cities like Mumbai, where enforcement is stricter, vehicle owners are increasingly opting for HSRP Mumbai to avoid fines and ensure hassle-free compliance.  Therefore, to avoid penalties and comply with the law, please make the upgrade as soon as possible.

HSRP Maharashtra Last Date & Penalty (2026)

If your vehicle was registered in Maharashtra before 1 April 2019, fitting a high security registration plate (HSRP) is compulsory. The state missed its 30 June 2026 deadline, and penalties are now in effect.

  • Strict Enforcement: Since 1 July 2026, operating a vehicle without an HSRP will attract a minimum fine of ₹ 1,000 imposed by the police and the RTO.
  • RTO Service Restriction: The inability to carry out certain crucial RTO services, such as the transfer of ownership, re-registration, updating hypothecation details, permit renewals, and modification approvals, will result from not having the HSRP fitted on your vehicle.
  • Penalty-free Appointment: You will only be safeguarded from any penalty until the day of your HSRP installation, scheduled by you, if, before 30 June 2026, you made an appointment with an authorised dealer for HSRP and kept proof of the aforementioned booking.
  • Most of the vehicles (those registered on/after 1 April 2019) would already have had their HSRP mounted by the dealer.

Approximately fifty per cent (half) of the eligible vehicles in Maharashtra have not yet completed the fitting of HSRP. Book one now to avoid penalties and the withholding of the service to your car.
