The Union Health Ministry has planned to set up 200 daycare cancer centres across 750+ district hospitals. It is a major step toward making cancer care more accessible, especially in rural areas. Backed by a ₹3,200 crore budget, this initiative, along with the rise of private and specialised day care centres, gives patients more options than ever. Choosing the right facility that is aligned with both medical needs and insurance coverage can make a big difference in both recovery and costs.
A day care centre is a medical stop where patients receive treatment or undergo minor operations without having to be admitted or stay overnight. These centres enable same-day discharge, being less disruptive to patients' daily routine. With day care coverage included in your health insurance, it ensures that treatments are reimbursed, even if they do not fulfil the 24-hour requirement on hospital stay.
Situated within larger hospitals, these centres are ideal for procedures that might require emergency backup or advanced diagnostics. This assures uninterrupted access of patients to specialised care in a safe, fully equipped medical setting.
Standalone centres cater only to outpatient services and short procedures. With shorter wait times, quicker scheduling, and a patient-centred approach, they work great for relatively minor surgeries or everyday treatments.
Multi-speciality day care centres focus on several specialities, such as ENT, orthopaedics, and dermatology, all under one roof. They bring the thoroughness of hospital care with the speed and efficiency of independent centres, so that the patients are aided with coordinated treatment without having to negotiate through a full-blown hospital system.
Centres such as those of oncology, ophthalmology, or gastroenterology. This allows them to provide highly specialised medical care, use highly advanced diagnostic tools, and create advanced treatment plans that will be very useful in the treatment of any chronic or complex health condition.

There’s a growing shift towards day care centres with growing urbanisation, increased healthcare costs, and the demand for convenient yet quality care. While metros continue to lead, access to Tier-II and some Tier-III cities is improving, driven by government and private participation. When going for care at a day care centre, prioritise quality certifications, insurance network compatibility, and facility specialisation.
