A US visa can be extended in one of two ways, depending on your goal:

  1. Extend your stay while in the US: You must file Form I-539 with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) before the expiration date of your current authorised stay (as noted on your Form I-94). It is advisable to submit this application at least 45 days prior to the scheduled start date. Ensure you have all required documents and are prepared to pay the associated Form I-539 fee.

  2. Renew your visa for future travel: You must renew your visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate in your home country before the visa expires.

Is the U.S. Visa Open in India Now?

What is the US visa cost for Indians?

As of 2025, the cost of a US visa is approximately $185 ( ₹15,350) for a B-1/B-2 visitor visa, which includes all additional fees. However, this can change. Effective January 1, 2026, a new $250 "Visa Integrity Fee" will be applied to most non-immigrant visas. This fee will significantly raise the total cost for all applicants.

Is a U.S. visa difficult to get?

What is the maximum duration I can stay in the US?

Individuals with a B1 or B2 visa can typically stay in the US for a maximum of 180 days.

Can I get a 10-year US visa?

Yes, you can get a B-1 or B-2 visa that is valid for up to 10 years. However, visitors on B-1 or B-2 are only permitted to stay in the United States for a short duration (a maximum of 180 days). However, you can enter multiple times during the validity period of your visa.

What should I do if my visa is stolen?

Can I reschedule my U.S. visa interview appointment?

Yes, you can reschedule your US visa interview appointment.

How long does it take to get a visa approved for the USA?

Due to the high volume of applicants, the waiting time for a US visa typically ranges from 300 to 320 days. It also depends on the type of visa. For example, a transit visa can be issued within 150-180 days, which is much faster than a tourist or business visa.

What will happen if I extend my stay beyond the validity of my US visa?

If you stay longer than the time on your US visa, you could face severe penalties and even be denied entry into the country again in the future.

How many months prior to the trip should I apply for a US visa?

Considering the 10-year validity of our multiple-entry US visas, the processing time is often extended. Therefore, we advise you to apply for your US visa 6 to 10 months prior to your intended travel date to the US.

Is it mandatory for Indian citizens to get travel insurance for a US visa?

No, having travel insurance is not compulsory for a US visa application from India, but we highly recommend it. You can explore Acko Travel Insurance to find plans that suit your budget.
