How to Perform E Challan Payment Online

Once you identify a pending e challan, you can proceed with echallan payment or online challan payment as described below.

Pay Traffic Challan via Parivahan Portal

Steps to Pay E-Challan on Parivahan:

  • Access the Portal: Go to the official Parivahan e-Challan website.
  • Enter Details: Enter your Challan Number, Vehicle Number, or Driving License (DL) Number.
  • Verify via OTP: Input the captcha code, click "Get Details," and proceed by verifying your mobile number with the OTP sent.
  • Make Payment: Review the pending violations, click "Pay Now," and select your preferred payment method (Net Banking, UPI, Credit/Debit Card).
  • Save Receipt: Complete the transaction and download the digital receipt for future reference.

Pay e-challan securely via State Traffic Police Site

To pay an e-challan via a state-specific traffic police site, follow these general steps. While each state has its own portal, the process is largely standardized:

  • Visit the Official State Portal: Go to the official traffic police or transport department website for your state (e.g., Bengaluru Traffic Police, Maharashtra Traffic Police, or Delhi Traffic Police).
  • Locate the Payment Section: Look for tabs labeled "Pay Traffic Challans," "Online Services," or "e-Challan Payments."
  • Enter Vehicle or Challan Details: You will typically be asked to provide one of the following:

1. Challan Number (found on the physical or digital notice).

2. Vehicle Registration Number (e.g., KA 01 AB 1234).

3. Driving Licence (DL) Number.

  • Verify Identity: Some state portals require a Mobile Number and OTP verification to ensure security before displaying fine details.
  • View and Select Fines: Review the list of pending violations, including the date, location, and fine amount. Select the specific challan you wish to pay.
  • Choose Payment Method: Select a secure payment gateway and complete the transaction using UPI, Net Banking, or Debit/Credit Cards (Visa/MasterCard).
  • Download Receipt: Once the payment is successful, download and save the digital receipt for your records

In India, over 8 crore traffic challans are issued every year, and unpaid challans can lead to higher penalties over time. Paying on time helps you avoid extra costs and stay compliant with ease.

What is an E Challan

An e-challan (also written as e challan or online challan) is the electronic version of a traditional traffic challan issued when a driver violates a traffic rule. Instead of a paper slip, the challan is generated digitally by the traffic police or RTO system and linked directly to the vehicle’s registration number through the Vahan database.

The e-challan stores details of the offence, fine amount, and other relevant information in an online database. This enables vehicle owners to conveniently check, track, and pay challans from any location. The system improves transparency, reduces paperwork, and speeds up the processing of traffic fines across India.

How does Traffic Challan work in India

In India, the process generally works like this:

  • A violation (for example overspeeding, jumping a red light, driving without a helmet or without valid documents) is detected via CCTV, ANPR camera, or by a traffic officer.
  • The vehicle registration number is matched via the VAHAN or RTO portal to identify the owner.
  • The system issues the rto challan or vahan challan in electronic form, i.e., your e-challan gets listed under your vehicle record.
  • You can then check challan online, perform an online challan check or complete a bike challan check (for two-wheelers) to view your current challan status.
