Kerala: An Overview

Kerala is a nature lover's heaven. It is known for its picturesque locations, including lush green forests, mountains and scenic beaches. Apart from that, the state is also known for unique festivals and events. It includes Onam, Kerala Boat Festival, Vishu, Attukal Pongala and Christmas.

• Onam is one of the most important festivals in Kerala. It is believed that Mahabali (Asura King) brought peace and prosperity to the people of Kerala. The festival involves people inviting Mahabali to their houses and preparing Onasadya, a vegetarian meal comprising more than 50 dishes.

• Kerala is known for its serene backwaters. Hence, boat races are famous in this state. The Kerala Boat Festival is an event to showcase beautifully decorated boats and the sport (boat race).

• Vishu is a festival that marks the beginning of the Malayali calendar year from Medam (month).

• Attukal Pongala is an important festival spanning ten days. It is celebrated at the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram.

• Christmas is another prominent festival in Kerala. Christmas trees, decorations, cakes and regional delicacies are some of the highlights of this festival.
