Car Insurance Claims

Your car insurance pays for your financial loss in case your vehicle is damaged or a death or injury of third-party or damage to the property due to your vehicle. The extent of compensation depends on the terms and conditions of your insurance policy. To initiate this payment, you have to make a claim against your car insurance. Inform your insurer immediately about the damage / accident. A surveyor will come to check the damage and approve the claim. The company will then settle the bill directly with your cashless garage or reimburse you.

How to Claim Car Insurance

Your car insurance pays for your financial loss in case your vehicle is damaged or a ‘third-party’ was damaged by your vehicle.

Steps to Claim on your Car Insurance

  • Take pictures of the damage, whether it was to your vehicle or to that of a third-party.
  • Inform your insurance company immediately.
  • File an FIR at the nearest police station and keep a copy with you. (A case would also need to be filed in the Motor Accidents Case Tribunal within 60 days, in case your car was wrecked by another vehicle, and you wish to be compensated on their car insurance policy.)
  • Do not try to force-start your car. Ask your insurance company or roadside assistance service to arrange for towing the car to the cashless garage.
  • Arrange for a car inspection with the insurance company. The surveyor will survey the damage and inform you about the amount claimable with the insurance policy.
  • Post inspection and surveyor report:
  • In case of cashless claim, the garage will settle the repairs amount with the insurance company. You would still need to bear the costs not covered in the insurance policy.
  • In case of reimbursement, you’d need to pay the garage the complete amount and submit the relevant bills to the insurance company.

When Claiming Wouldn’t be Possible

  • Drunk driving or under influence of some other intoxicant.
  • Driving without a valid driving license.
  • Delay in intimating the insurance company about the claim.
  • Not informing your insurer before the repair / vehicle inspection.
  • A lapsed policy

Types of Car Insurance Claim

Your claim depends on the type of insurance you have. This is because different insurance types offer different coverage. So, your insurer will pay for a particular damage only if it is covered under the policy. Making a claim in such cases only lead to rejection.

So here are the different claims you can make:

  • Claim for Third Party Damage:

The most basic car insurance covers ‘Third Party liability’. This is when you claim for damage caused to another person and their vehicle. Your insurer will take care of the other vehicle’s damage.

  • Claim for Own Vehicle Damage:

In case another car rams into yours, your insurer will pay for these damages. However, your insurance policy needs to cover for ‘own damage’. This is usually a part of a ‘comprehensive car insurance’. Such a policy also covers damage caused by acts of nature like earthquake, lightning, storm, flood, cyclone and man-made acts like riots, terror attacks, and vandalism.

  • Claim for Personal Injuries:

Car insurance policies also pay for any treatments you undergo due to an accident-related damage. While making the claim, you will have to submit the details of the medical treatment. You must also prove that the injury was a result of the accident.
