Manipur: An Overview

Manipur is a state with unique culture, festivals and fairs. The state’s distinct landscape also makes it a perfect tourist destination. Some of the important festivals of this state include Gang-Ngai, Lui-Ngai-Ni, Yaoshang, Cheiraoba, Kang, Ningol Chakouba, Chumpha and Heikru Hidongba. The general public gets a day off during these celebrations.

  • Gang-Ngai is a five-day festival celebrated at the start or end of the calendar year. It involves singing, dancing and preparing a feast. The festival is of great significance to the Kabui Nagas of Manipur.

  • Lui-Ngai-Ni is a festival related to agriculture. It is an event to celebrate seed sowing and involves singing, dancing and social gatherings.

  • Yaoshang is the biggest festival in Manipur, and it spans five days. One of the attractions of this festival is the Thabal Chongba, a Manipuri dance form.

  • Cheiraoba is a Manipuri new year festival usually celebrated in April. It involves people cleaning their houses, preparing special delicacies and offering to their deities.

  • Kang is a Ratha Yatra festival in Manipur. The Lord’s Ratha (vehicle) is called Kang, and it is moved by the devotees. It is a similar festival to the Jagannath Rath Yatra of Odisha.
