Sikkim: An Overview

Sikkim is a state with scenic locations and interesting culture. The state celebrates some unique festivals apart from the common festivals, such as Diwali, Holi, Christmas, etc. Some of the prominent festivals of Sikkim include Losoong Festival, Losar Festival, Bhumchu Festival, International Flower Festival, Saga Dawa and Tendong Lho Rum Faat.

  • Losoong Festival is a new year celebration and a carnival. The highlights of this festival are the Chaam dance and various contests that also include archery.

  • Losar Festival is a harvest festival, which is also called Gyalpo Losar. It is the Tibetan New Year event. It involves people visiting monasteries, performing rituals, visiting their loved ones and offering flowers.

  • Bhumchu Festival is based on the Tibetan lunar calendar. A sacred pot containing holy water is traditionally called Bhumchu. People visit the Tashiding monastery to celebrate this festival.

  • The International Flower Festival is held in Gangtok, and a variety of flowers are on display during this festival.

  • Mahayana Buddhists celebrate the Saga Dawa festival in Sikkim. It involves the lighting of lamps in monasteries and mask dances. Monks move in convoys in Gangtok and chant hymns during this festival.
