Uttarakhand is known for its religious sites and unique culture. Apart from tourism, the state is also known for colourful festivals and fairs. Some of the important festivals of the state include Kumbh Mela, Basant Panchami, Harela, Nanda Devi Fair and Holi.
Kumbh Mela is a popular fair, and Uttrakhand is one of the locations for this popular fair. People from all over the country attend this event. It is believed that taking a dip in the holy Ganga river during the Kumbh Mela washes away sins.
Basant Panchami is a seasonal festival which marks the end of winter and the beginning of the spring season. People wear traditional attire, offer prayers to Goddess Saraswati and prepare rice-based meals.
Harela, celebrated in July, marks the beginning of the monsoon season. As per mythology, it is the day of the wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It also involves people making small clay idols of Ganesha Gauri and Maheshwar.
Nanda Devi Fair, as the name suggests, is a popular fair in Uttarakhand, dedicated to Goddesses Nanda and Sunanda. People from Almora and Roopkund attend this fair.
