Gujarat is a marvellous state which has many wondrous sights such as the ancient Somnath Temple on the shores of the sea, the salt-infused stretches of land of the Rann of Kutch, which play host to a large number of people during the winter owing to the various sporting events such as camel races etc. that are conducted there.
People travelling to visit these places are liable to pay the applicable Gujarat Road Tax as per the mandate of the Gujarat Motor Vehicles Tax Act, 1958. The Act stipulates that all vehicle owners residing in the state of Gujarat or travelling there must pay the compulsory road tax levied by the State Government.
Gujarat has a massive road network of over19000 km of State Highways and over30,000 km of Panchayat roads. The road tax levied by the Government of Gujarat is utilised to maintain and construct newer roads within the state, adding to the road network and facilitating a seamless flow of vehicles.
This flow of traffic greatly contributes to increased opportunities for commerce and tourism, among other things.
The process of calculating road tax in Gujarat is one of the simplest in the country. It is calculated based on factors such as vehicle category, class, etc. which is why the road tax levied on vehicle owners varies as per their vehicle.
Gujarat has a simple tax structure for two-wheelers. The Gujarat Road Tax for bikes is as follows:
|Age of the Motorcycle||Amount to be paid (Percentage of cost of the vehicle)|
|New vehicles and those less than 8 years old||6%|
|Vehicles between 8 and 15 years old||15%|

The road tax in Gujarat levied on cars is calculated at a flat rate of 6% of the total cost of the vehicle.
