The northeastern state of Assam is flush with wildlife, nature, and waterbodies. This area has remained largely unexplored for years. However, tourism has now picked up due to the recent developments of the road system.
The Assam Government has given a big push to vitalise the road infrastructure, resulting in well-connected highways and byways ideal for road travel. The road tax in Assamis the primary source of funds to carry out these developments.
If you are a resident of the state, then take a minute to understand your tax liabilities better.
Road tax is a specialised fee that all motor vehicle owners must pay at the time of registration of the vehicle and is levied by state governments.
The road tax in Assam is both assessed and collected by the Assam Regional Transport Office (RTO). The RTO charges collected are used for the maintenance and construction of new roads as well as increasing road safety.
The Assam RTO tax is levied in accordance with the Motor Vehicles Taxation Act of 1936. It states that every vehicle driving on the state’s roads must pay this charge beforehand unless it is exempt specifically.
The amount of vehicle road tax in Assam payable is estimated after considering various factors, such as:
The purpose of the vehicle (private use or commercial carrier)
Weight of the vehicle
The vehicle's age
The vehicle's model and make
The vehicle's cost
The location where it was assembled
Accordingly, the tax payable differs for different kinds of vehicles—be it a bike or car or a private or commercial vehicle.
For personal vehicles, this is a one-time charge. It is calculated as a proportion of the cost of a bike or car. Also, keep in mind that the cost refers to the ex-showroom price of the vehicle, not the on-road price.
Now let’s take a look at the tax you would have to pay for driving cars or bikes in Assam.
While computing the road tax for a two-wheeler in Assam, the weight of the vehicle is taken into consideration.
See the table below for the categories and applicable road tax for two-wheelers in Assam:
Tax Rate Payable
Lighter than 65 kg
Between 65 kg and 90 kg
Between 90 kg and 135 kg
Heavier than 135 kg
Two-wheelers with sidecars
Rs. 1,000 additional
This tax is valid for 15 years from the vehicle’s registration date. Post this period, owners would have to pay Rs. 500 or Rs. 1,000 every 5 years, based on the weight category of the bike.
On the other hand, for four-wheelers, the vehicle's ex-showroom cost is considered while calculating the road tax in Assam. If you intend to buy a car, use the information below to understand your tax liabilities.
The vehicle tax on four-wheelers in Assam is calculated as follows:
Cost of the Vehicle
Tax Rate as a percentage of the vehicle cost
Tax for every 5 years after 15 years
Less than 3 lakhs
Rs 3 lakhs to Rs. 15 lakhs
Rs 15 lakhs to Rs 20 lakhs
More than 20 lakhs
This tax is levied for a period of 15 years. Post this, the owners would be paying between Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 12,000 as tax every five years, based on the actual ex-showroom price.
When it comes to passenger vehicles being used for commercial purposes, taxes are levied a little differently in Assam. Unlike the two-wheeler and four-wheeler charges, these taxes are annual in nature. They are not one-time payments.
Do note that the Assam RTO also permits quarterly payments.
