What should you do when you lose a PAN card?

If your PAN card is lost or stolen, immediately file an FIR incident report at your nearest police station. Once you file an FIR, you will receive an incident process and begin your lost PAN card request procedure. 

When your PAN card is lost, you can request a duplicate PAN or opt for a reprint of the card. Your PAN Card number and details will not change, you'll only get a new PAN card. 

Documents required for lost PAN card 

You will need a set of documents in order to apply for your lost PAN card. These documents include:

  • Self-attested address proof

    • AADHAAR Card

    • Bank statement

    • Electricity bill

  • Documents with date of birth 

    • Passport

    • School certificate 

    • Birth Certificate

  • PAN allotment letter/self-attested copy of PAN Card

Steps to apply for lost PAN card online 

When you lose your PAN card, don't sweat! Here's a step by step guide to how to apply for a lost PAN card. 

1. File an FIR

Go to your closest police station to raise a First Information Report FIR. This FIR will include details of your PAN card loss, as well as collect your personal information such as your address and phone number. 

2. Apply Online

Go to the Income Tax Department of India online website, https://www.incometaxindia.gov.in/. Navigate to the "Reprint PAN Card" section and select it. You will have to fill out a Form 49 application in order to apply for your duplicate PAN card.

3. Make The Payment 

Depending on whether you're a resident Indian or a non-resident Indian (NRI), you'll need to pay a certain fee for your duplicate PAN card. Your residency status will determine whether your lost PAN card needs to be delivered within India or overseas. 

Once you fill up and submit your Form 49 application, you will be redirected to a payment gateway. You can pay the fee with UPI apps or via netbanking options.

Indian resident - Rs.110

Non-resident Indians (NRI) - Rs.1,020.

4. Submit Necessary Documents

Since a PAN card is proof of your identity and linked to your finances and banks, you will need to provide the necessary documents in order to verify your identity and make sure no fraudulent requests are being made. Usually, the documents you need to submit will include a copy of the FIR incident report, your AADHAR card, and 2 passport-sized photographs.

When you submit your AADHAR, an OTP will be generated and sent to your registered mobile number. Verify the OTP to move the lost PAN card process forward. 

You have to submit scanned copies of the documents mentioned above. This is done through the e-sign process. AADHAAR needs to be uploaded as well as your photos, signature, and address proof. 

5. Select type Of PAN Card 

After you upload your documents, you will have to select your PAN card type. You can choose between a physical PAN card or an e-PAN card. For an e-PAN card, you will need to give your email address so that your digitally signed e-PAN can be sent.

6. Receive PAN Acknowledgement Number 

Note down the token number and PAN Acknowledgement number you will be given. These numbers will be used throughout the lost PAN card process.

Every PAN card comes with an acknowledgement number when you apply for your duplicate PAN card. You can use this number to track the status of your application, as well as use it as a temporary PAN card for details. 

7. Submit and Track Application

After you complete the online lost PAN card application and upload the documents, go ahead and submit it. With the 15 digit PAN acknowledgement number you received, you can track your application from start to delivery.

8. Get Duplicate PAN Card

Now this is where you sit back and wait! A successful lost PAN card process means that you will receive your duplicate PAN card at your address within 2 weeks.  application.

How to apply for duplicate PAN Card offline

You can also get a duplicate PAN card for your lost PAN card by applying offline. Here's the process to apply for a lost PAN card duplicate offline. 

1. Print or use ready application form 

  • Go ahead and download and print an application for “request for new PAN card or/and changes or Correction in PAN Data”.

  • You need to fill the form out in only BLOCK letters and BLACK INK, as per the requirements.

  • Enter your 10 digit PAN number

  • Attach 2 passport size photographs and cross-signed them, making sure you sign across half of the photo and half of the form, making sure to not write over the face.

2. Send In Application 

  • Once you're done filling up the application, send it in, along with the payment, as well as proof of identity, proof of address, and proof of PAN. You will need to send this application to your nearest NSDL facilitation centre. Once the centre receives the payment, you'll receive a PAN acknowledgement number with 15 digits.

  • Use the PAN acknowledgement number to track the status of your duplicate PAN card.

  • You'll receive your duplicate PAN card within 2 weeks of submitting your lost PAN card application.
