Generally, when you tell your kiddo that hot water freezes faster than cold water, he might not believe you. But this simple science experiment is good enough to prove this. Moreover, it will also help your kid to develop his motor and imagination skills.
Requisites: Foam cup with cold water, foam cup with the same amount of hot or boiling water, freezer, clock or timer.
Steps:
1. Take a foam cup and fill it up with cold tap water.
2. Take another foam cup and fill it up with the same amount of hot water.
3. Place both cups in the freezer and start the timer.
4. Keep an eye on the cups and check them after every 15 minutes of times.
5. You will notice that hot water freezes faster than cold water.
Now explain it to your kid, why this happens. This effect is also known as Mpemba effect. This happens because when water molecules are brought into close contact, natural repulsion between molecules causes covalent bonds to stretch and then store energy. But when water warms up, hydrogen bonds stretch and molecules move further apart as a result, the water gets less dense. The stretching in hydrogen bonds makes the covalent bonds to shrink and as a result they give up their energy. This process of covalent bonds to give up their energy is same as the process of cooling resulting in hot water freezing faster than cold water.
