Team AckoFeb 8, 2024

Female fertility comes to an end with menopause. Ovaries no longer release an egg every month and periods stop. What about male fertility? Does male fertility decline with age or does it last forever?

Male fertility is finite. It does not last forever. It starts to decline around 40-45 years when the quality of sperm decreases. With older men, the genetic quality of sperm gets worse and the sperm count decreases. The chances of conception go down and there is risk of miscarriage and fetal death. Though many men remain fertile till 60, the conceiving chances are very poor.

Before we discuss whether paternal age impacts IVF success rate, let's understand what is advanced paternal age, the risk factors involved due to APA, and IVF Advanced paternal age (APA): When a man whose age is 40 and above at the time of conception.

If a male is over 40, the pregnancy outcomes as well as the would-be baby’s health is at risk. The risk factors are:

Fertility

-Conception can be difficult

-Risk of miscarriage

Health of baby

-Rare birth defects in development of limbs, skull and heart

-Risk of mental health issues

Due to advanced paternal age, conception can be difficult. If after trying for 6 months, conception does not happen naturally, your doctor may suggest assisted fertility methods like IVF.

What is IVF?

IVF is In vitro fertilisation where matured eggs are retrieved from ovaries and are fertilized by sperm in a lab. The fertilized egg is then transferred to the uterus.

Now that we know about APA, risk factors involved and IVF, let's find out whether  paternal age affect IVF success rate?

Does paternal age affect the success of IVF?

The answer is YES!  The reason is, after a certain age, the sperm is too weak to fertilize the egg. If a couple opts for IVF procedure, the risk of not conceiving is five times higher if the male is 41 years and above.

Hence, just like maternal age, paternal age also plays a crucial role for positive pregnancy outcome and a healthy baby. More the delay, less are the chances for natural conception. If a couple is considering fertility treatment like IVF, the success rate is high if the age of male is below 40 and female is below 35.
