Letting the feeling sink in: You have a human growing inside you & life's going to change

Pregnancy not just involves physical changes but you undergo a lot of mental and emotional changes as well. In the initial trimester, your body apparently will not exhibit many waves and make you feel pregnant. Your mind will take some time to register itself and make more apparent changes. By now you might also some cravings, so much that once your favorite dishes and drinks are suddenly so unpleasing and unappetizing. Aversions to common food like tea, coffee, alcohol, fried food, eggs, are common for expecting moms. Does it sound relatable? Well, then you are completely on the right track, and even if not, there’s nothing to worry about!



A brand-new human is taking shape inside you

It’s okay to freak out a little as the realization dawns in your head, but hey, isn’t it amazing too? Your fertilized-egg is now multiplying and measures around the size of a grain of dal (lentil). The cells are developing and secreting Pregnancy Hormone (human chorionic gonadotropin) and they will also develop into the placenta gradually. These hormones indicate your ovaries to boost production of estrogen and progesterone. Also, the amniotic fluid is beginning to form in the cavity that will become the amniotic sac for your little one. 

You might be a little surprised to know that the placenta and the umbilical cord and the placenta are functioning and they are playing the role of passing oxygen and nutrients between you and your baby. The brain and the spinal cord are beginning to take shape. 

All this while we discussed the internal body changes that you would be undergoing, rather these changes are already happening with you each and every day. 

Your changing emotions

There are certain emotional changes and feelings you shall undergo, which most of the times shall be unexplainable. Your emotional state can be extremely fragile or maybe at times, you are not emotional at all about anything. The fluctuations that are happening in your body will, of course, affect the outset too. 

The point is: You must never allow your emotional or physical state to affect your mental state too much. As we know and have heard several times in our life that Change is the only constant thing! This change that you are undergoing is one of the most beautiful and fulfilling change. Not only does it complete you but it makes you feel more wanted and desired. 

In our Indian society, the scene is relatively different once you announce the arrival of a new member. If you are staying alone with your hubby, your in-laws choose to come over with the intention of helping you and taking care. At times it is not so very easy to adjust with this sudden intrusion of space and managing both their expectation and yourself too. A lot of apprehensions grip you at this moment and then this sudden intrusion. Try to relax as much as you can and try not getting too excited or stressed. Avoid elaborating trivial matters and ignore them as much as you can. 

Grandma’s Tip: You’re becoming a Maa, now. Don’t be too conservative about your thoughts, including your cravings and wishes during this phase. Don’t hesitate to be vocal about things, because this is your time to be pampered and others must take care of you. You need to be happy all the time in order for your baby to be hale and hearty. So, khush raho! 

In your initial trimester, you might be experiencing morning sickness associated with nausea and vomiting, which is actually extremely unpredictable and unpleasant. Few small tips might help you combat them, like eating in small portions and more frequently, carry a small bag of crackers and knick-knack food items. Try to pop biscuits or dry fruits as soon as you get up in the morning to avoid acidity leading to vomiting and nausea. 

You must surely control your intake of processed food and stick to healthy food like protein, complex carbohydrate and lots of leafy vegetables. 

Your physiological changes in pregnancy

Physiological changes associated with pregnancy often lead few pregnant women to problems of constipation. You can try to control by consuming specific food items and doing a lot of exercises. 

Frequent urination can also be a problematic issue; it can cause disruptions to sleep. Try to keep yourself hydrated at all times but less in the evenings, so that you can alleviate toilet trips at night. If at any time you experience any other form of discomfort or burning sensation or stinging sensation while urination, then it’s time to consult a doctor. 

Tiredness and fatigue go hand in hand during pregnancy. If you can manage or control your sleep schedule then you will find it easier to manage the tiredness during the daytime. Try to sneak in a nap as and when you can manage and take some time off from your daily chores and give yourself some break. 

Anxiety and apprehension is another very important aspect of pregnancy, you now worry not only about yourself but also the little living growing inside you. It is quite natural to fret about what you drink, eat, think or even what you feel. It’s perfectly normal to worry about your new bundle of joy as you step into the threshold of parenthood. 

But if you feel that your anxiety and apprehensions are simply growing by leaps and bounds, then it’s time to check yourself and correct yourself. To start off, try to share your issues with your partner; make him a part of this beautiful journey as much as you can. Communicating can help you harbor some overrated issues and can help both of you feel better. You can also extend your concern to mothers who already have children, maybe they can calm you and help you sort out trivial issues and counsel you to take things easy or even deal with specific problems. 

You must also know that a high level of chronic stress can boost your odds of preterm labor or deliver a low birth-weight baby. So, by taking good care of you self you are actually taking care of your little one.
