Green Tomato Pappu is an excellent combination of tomatoes and lentils. The highlight is the tempering of garlic and chili flakes. This dish pairs well with rice.

1 cup toovar (arhar) dal, 2 medium green tomatoes, 4 green chiles, 1 tsp turmeric powder (haldi), 1 tsp salt
Seasoning:
1 tsp oil, 1 tsp mustard seeds (rai/sarson), ½ tsp cumin seeds (jeera), a pinch asafoetida (hing), 5 curry leaves (kadi patta), 2 red chiles, 2 cloves garlic (lehsun)
1. Chop the tomatoes into quarters.
2. Wash and pressure cook toor dhal with chopped tomatoes, green chillies, turmeric powder and 3 cups of water.
3. Mash the dal, green chillies & tomatoes, add salt.
4. For seasoning, heat oil, add mustard seeds, curry leaves, broken red chilli, garlic flakes, asafoetida and add it to the dal.
5. Cook on a slow flame for few minutes.
If the tomatoes are not sour, you can add a little tamarind.
