Mag ni Dal is a dry version of the regular dal with all the spices. You can soak the dal earlier to reduce cooking time. The dal should not be soggy like the usual one. This dish is nutritious as dal is high on protein.

Ingredients to make Mag ni Dal:
1 cup yellow moong dal (split yellow gram), 2 tbsp oil, ½ tsp mustard seeds (rai /sarson), 1/4 tsp asafoetida (hing), 1 tsp chilli powder, ½ tsp turmeric powder (haldi), 1½ tsp coriander-cumin seeds (dhania-jeera) powder, 1 tsp lemon juice, ½ tsp sugar, salt to taste
Steps to make Mag ni Dal:
1. Wash and soak the dal in warm water for at least 1½ hours. Drain and keep aside.
2. Heat the oil in a deep non-stick pan and add the mustard seeds.
3. When the seeds crackle, add the asafoetida and the soaked dal and sauté on a medium flame for a minute.
4. Add the chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander-cumin seeds powder and sauté on a medium flame for another 2 minutes, while stirring continuously.
5. Remove from the flame, transfer the dal mixture in a vessel and add ¼ cup water and mix well.
6. Place this vessel in a pressure cooker and pressure cook for 2 whistles.
7. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.
8. Add the lemon juice, sugar and salt and mix well.
Mag ni Dal is ready!
