First, your child learns to walk forward, then he figures out how to move sideways and then finally backwards. As his legs gets stronger and the muscles develop, his confidence will build up.
When you teach your child to walk forward, you hold his hands for support and encouragement. Do the same when you teach him to walk backwards. Gradually, switch to holding one hand till he learns to walk backwards on his own. Motivate him to do different activities as he walks backward. For instance, sing a rhyme while taking a few steps backwards or play games like “Now we move 3 steps backwards. One, two and three.”
