Your bundle of joy is now 6 years old and at this age his milk teeth will start falling out and permanent teeth will start to appear. Talk to your child in advance about this transition so that she is prepared and won't be scared. By working early on forming good dental hygiene habits for your child, better are the chances that she has healthy and beautiful teeth in the years to come.

What you need to know
At 6 years, she might start to clean her own teeth but will still need your supervision. Brush back and forth on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. Doing it in front of a mirror is good as it will help you see her mouth. The regular adult fluoride toothpaste can be started at this age. She will need only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste applied on the brush. From the age of 6 to 12 she will have a mixture of baby as well as adult teeth. If proper oral hygiene practices are not followed, there is a high risk of tooth decay. Not brushing twice daily and consuming lot of sugary snacks/drinks cause the tooth to decay.
Brushing at night is vital. If your child is tired and resists doing the brushing at night, one of the best ways to get her do it, is to do it first. Seeing you model the right behaviour, she will follow. Substitute sugary snacks like cakes, biscuits with healthy choices like fresh fruit or vegetables, bread sticks, wholegrain bread or toast. Proper oral hygiene practice and advice from a dentist at the right time will take care of your child’s teeth.
