Endometriosis & Fertility: Is it a Dead-End?

Team AckoFeb 8, 2024

The word 'endometriosis' derives from the word endometrium, the lining in the uterus that your body produces during the egg implantation every month. Menstruation is the word given to the shedding of this layer in case of failure of conceiving.

Sometimes this tissue travels out of the ends of the fallopian tubes and attaches to the other organs of the body through getting absorbed by the stomach. Hormones make this extra tissue to grow and also shed as they shed in the uterus. This bleeding has no way to come out of the body causing the inflammation and irritation of the local tissue. The pain is also experienced by the patients of the endometriosis.

Symptoms of Endometriosis

Symptoms of endometriosis may include severe pain and discomfort during and before the menstruation cycle. Painful intercourse and infertility are also part of their symptoms. It includes pain and other abnormalities like pain during urination and defecation, whereas many females do not show any symptoms of endometriosis at all.

The symptoms and severity of endometriosis cannot be correlated as some women go through a mild stage of the disease but experience severe symptoms while some are at a severe stage of endometriosis and have mild symptoms. So, better to be alert all the time and listen to what your body is trying to tell you.

Impact of Endometriosis on Fertility

Endometriosis has a severe effect on the fertility of the female. Inflammation of the fimbria that has to pick up the egg and transport it to the fallopian tube, causes scarring and swelling of the site failing the transporting of the egg to the uterus and this leads to infertility. Also, the swelling due to endometriosis can damage the eggs and the sperms. In some cases during the advanced stages, this can also can cause adhesions making the pelvic organs stick into each other, affecting their functions. It can also block the fallopian tubes.

Laparoscopy is the choice of treatment for patients in whom a cyst is formed due to endometriosis that can be detected by an ultrasound. It is a minor surgery that involves the insertion of a scope through the abdomen to the place where the cyst is present. During the process, your doctor will treat any endometriosis with scissors, laser, or cauterization to remove the lesions.

Pregnancy

The best thing is that pregnancy itself improves endometriosis. The hormones released during pregnancy makes the tissues of endometriosis to resolve. So, doctors encourage females to conceive rather than go for a surgical intervention.

But when the condition is severe and it hinders pregnancy to occur, then laparoscopy is the first choice for the doctors to get rid of endometriosis. After surgery, there are good chances of conception within the first few months. Once you are pregnant and the problem has been resolved, your doctor will start taking the essential steps to get rid of the reccurring endometrosis.

Breastfeeding and birth control pills help to slow the growth of the endometriosis. So, as you finish breastfeeding, your doctor may suggest you to start taking birth control pills so that the endometrium will remain healthy and not cause any problems. And when you want to get pregnant, simply stop taking the pills. This is the best plan that works better than undergoing the laparoscopy procedure again or opting for any other infertility treatment.
