Getting pregnant is dependent on when ovulation occurs in your cycle. Five days around and the day of ovulation is the time when the chances of getting pregnant are the highest. Either fertilization happens or when a matured egg does not get fertilized by the sperm, period starts.

Now we come to the main question.

Can a woman get pregnant during period time?

The answer is yes, though the chances are very low. But cannot be ruled out.

This depends on the length of your menstrual cycle. If the duration of the cycle is less than 28 days, and sex happens in the end of 6 day long period and you ovulate soon after, pregnancy can happen. Sperm can survive in a woman’s body for about 5 days.

So, women who have shorter cycles, ovulate soon after the menstrual cycle ends. Unprotected intercourse during the last days of cycle will increase the chances of pregnancy in such case. Hence its better to avoid sex during period, if you don’t want to get pregnant.

In case you have a longer cycle, then also the risk of pregnancy is there. This is because as your body is slowly shedding the lining of the uterus, the time is nearing the next ovulation cycle. This means you are fertile again and can get pregnant due to unprotected intercourse.

What happens if intercourse happens right before period and after period? In both cases the possibility of pregnancy is there especially when the cycles are irregular and the length of cycle is either short or long. However, if the cycles are regular, you are less likely to get pregnant before and during period but more chances after period.

In short, pregnancy can happen when period is on or any time during the month. If you are not planning to get pregnant, it’s wise to be on a suitable birth control method.
