Let us address the following questions here. What are fertility lubricants? How they help? Are all safe? Will the fertility lubricants increase the chances of conception?

What do fertility lubricants do?

They mimic natural cervical fluids. The stress of having sex on a schedule (fertile window) and hoping for conception, may cause the body to produce less of natural lubricant. Certain fertility drugs can also disrupt natural lubrication. In such situations where natural lubrication is less, fertility lubricants help. If you are suffering from vaginal dryness, using lubricant will minimize the dryness and increase comfort during sex. It also gives an easier path and right environment for sperm to travel through a women’s cervix where it meets the egg and conception occurs.

Are all fertility lubricants safe?

The answer is NO! There are lubricants, which harm the sperm, cause DNA damage, or obstruct sperm motility. They can dehydrate the sperm and affect its motility. Also, these lubricants can contain ingredients like glycerol, which are toxic to sperm. This implies you cannot use any regular lubricant. While buying lubricant look for fertility-friendly ones, especially which are sperm-friendly lubricants.

Sperm friendly lubricants have ingredients, which don’t harm the sperm. The PH of the lubricant is balanced, neither too acidic nor too alkaline. This ensures the quality of the sperm and its motility is not damaged.

There is no clear evidence on whether fertility friendly lubricants increase the chances of conception. But they definitely help a couple to have sex comfortably. The key is to choose lubricants that are sperm-friendly. Above all, try to improve your overall health by eating right and exercising regularly.
