All You Need to Know about Fertility Preservation

Team AckoFeb 8, 2024

Fertility preservation involves freezing of eggs, sperm, embryos or a reproductive tissue which will help a person to have biological children in future. Certain medical conditions and life events can disrupt fertility later on and make it difficult to conceive. People in such situations can benefit from fertility preservation.

Benefit from fertility preservation and be hopeful of being a biological parent later in their life.

Cancer diagnosis

While being treated for cancer, there are some drugs, which can cause infertility when used in high doses. Under this medical condition, one may want to freeze eggs, sperm or embryos.

Postponing Pregnancy

If a woman wants to postpone having children as she is not financially and emotionally ready or has other life plans to pursue, she may go for fertility preservation.  For example, egg freezing option may be considered where she can freeze her unfertilized eggs and use them later when she is ready to start a family.

Reproductive health issues: Endometriosis and Uterine fibroids

If a woman is suffering from Endometriosis or Uterine fibroids, getting pregnant can be difficult. She can talk her doctor and go for fertility preservation.

Lupus: Autoimmune disease

Lupus is a long-term autoimmune disease. The body’s immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal, healthy tissue. If a woman suffering from Lupus gets pregnant, her pregnancy is a high risked one. There is an increased risk of miscarriage, premature birth, preeclampsia and heart issues in the baby. To avoid complications, she may benefit from fertility preservation.

Work environment

People who at workplace are exposed to toxic chemicals can benefit from fertility preservation. These chemicals can reduce the quality of sperm and eggs and thereby impair fertility.

Genetic condition

People may have a genetic condition which impacts future fertility. By going for fertility preservation, they can keep their hope alive of being able to have children of their own later on.

Fertility preservation can be done in a short period of time. Once done, it allows patients suffering from medical issues to move forward in getting them treated. While suggesting which fertility preservation option to go for, the fertility specialist will review the situation taking into account the patient’s age, medical condition, sex and timing of starting the treatment. One or more options may be available.
