After your baby is born, your baby's umbilical cord is cut and clamped. At his tummy, a stump that is 2cm to 3cm long will exist. Most umbilical stumps fall off between 5 and 15 days after birth. The stump will shrivel up, turn black, and drop off on it's own, don’t pull on it. There will be a small wound that will heal and become your baby's belly button.

Take care of this umbilical cord stump by keeping it dry and clean so that it doesn’t stay humid. Apply the prescribed ointment as per your doctor’s advice for cord care. Ensure that you fold the baby’s diaper or cloth away from the stump so that it does not come in contact with urine.
