All these factors trigger the worry and anxiety in parents right from the early days of your baby's birth and so on at every stage of his life irrespective of the age. Though it is normal for parents to worry about their children and be concerned about their safety, it is also important to make sure that it does not turn into anxiety, which usually is a result of fear, insecurity, thoughts of risk and planning too much ahead.

Parental anxiety can not only cause stress and ill-health to parents but also will affect the child's well being and growth. Being active and social is an important aspect of a child's development. An anxious parent may restrict a lot of their child's activities outdoor or indoor, assuming it is for the benefit of the child, however, they may not realize soon that it could actually induce stress and negative thoughts into a child's brain, as he does not understand the seriousness of the issue. So, it is extremely critical to handle the anxiety with care and be in control.

How to deal with parental anxiety?

Here are some healthy tips which will help you reduce the anxiety and be in control of your child’s well being in a positive manner:

1) Accept the fact:

As a parent, you will have to first accept that you are fearful and anxious about your child. Not accepting this fact will make you more stressful as you will think that you have a psychological problem with being too worrisome about your child. The feeling of anxiety comes naturally as a parent, so don't let it dominate you completely.

2) Safety norms:

Though you hear and see many cases of kidnapping, abuse, bullying, accidents etc, you can get rid of this fear by taking some precautions on your child’s safety like checking on your school’s safety norms, setting some rules with your child while meeting strangers or playing with other kids, making your child aware of the danger or threat around her and guiding her with safety precautions or self-defense.

3) Healthy mindful exercises:

When you are under stress, just take some deep breath for few seconds. It will work wonders. Breathing exercise like Pranayam or Yoga or meditation will help you release the anxiety and keep your mind healthy.

4) Keep the social media away:

Social media these days are filled with news on child's abduction, sexual abuse, human trafficking, accidents etc. Though being connected on the current happenings around you is important, too much of anything is really harmful. So keep the news or other social media connections away for some time. Keep your connections limited to healthy circles which will benefit you and your child.

5) Reduce exploring on Google:

As anxious parents, you would always want to know more about small things in your child. Like if your child is little hyperactive, you start googling on the topic which will lead you to many insights on psychological disorders in children like ADHD and this will start worrying you. Or if your child has some minor health symptoms, you google again and find more about strange diseases which will cause a concern and increase your stress level. Though google helps and gives answers to many questions, it can also add to your anxiety. So it is advisable to reduce your search on Google.

6) Keep your discussions healthy and positive:

Learning and practicing to be positive take lot of effort, but it will yield a good result if you do it along with your child. Assuring yourself that your child will be fine is a good start. Be it at home, office or outside, always encourage positive talks or discussion with family or among children, other parents or friends. Sometimes, talking to parents who are already in bigger trouble of anxiety will force you to become one.

Make sure you do not entertain negative discussions. If you see that your encouragement is not working with some people, it is better to avoid further discussions with them. Every step that you take towards reducing your anxiety, make sure to practice it with your child as well. Along with you, It will also help your child to become more confident and fearless. As your child grows, they will be automatically exposed to the world outside and will learn to take precautions themselves, only if you are strong and support them positively.

When you feel things are out of control and none of the tips are helping you, do not hesitate to seek advice from a psychological expert or family counselor.
