At this stage, your child usually lies when he is afraid of the consequences of telling the truth, or when he really wants to do something but is forbidden to do it. Do not overreact or punish him when he lies; rather, try to understand the motive behind the lie and deal with that issue. If something is forbidden, make him understand why it is so.
Explain to your child that it is not right to lie. Encourage him to instead talk to you about why he felt the need to lie. Gain his trust and become a good listener. Soon you will start seeing him opening up and being more honest.
Try to avoid situations where your child might feel tempted to lie, such as restraining your temper when he breaks something, and instead dealing with the matter calmly. If your child is no longer scared of your reaction, he will be encouraged to tell the truth more.
