At week 18, your doctor will call you for level 2 ultrasound to check the major developments in your baby. During this ultrasound, you will be able to see your baby more clearly and you will be able to distinguish his organs more clearly now. You will be able to hear the heartbeat as well and doctor will check for the developing spine of the baby for its regular growth. At this stage, your baby has developed a thin layer of fat under the skin to keep himself warm and you can also see the cleft lip of your baby. The chambers and valve of your baby’s heart will be examined properly and stomach and kidney functioning will also be checked. The doctor will also check your placenta’s position confirming that it is not lying low and is placed in your uterus. There will be a check on the thickness of umbilical cord and amount of amniotic fluid as well.
The doctor will also take the few measurements of your baby’s head, abdomen, and thigh bones to make sure that the baby is growing at a normal pace. This ultrasound is also done to check certain abnormalities in the baby at this point of time like spina bifida, kidney functioning, heart problems and abdominal walls. This ultrasound will define the proper growth of your baby and more or less defines the due date when baby will be in your arms.
