Watch the calendar for your Gyn/OBN visits

Team AckoFeb 8, 2024

As you step in the 8th week of your pregnancy, you need to start scheduling your visits once a month with your gynaecologist. Till your second trimester, it would ideally be once a month, but the frequency will increase to twice a month once you step into your third trimester. Saving these important dates in your pregnancy calendar is important. During these check-ups, you can ask questions and clear all the necessary doubts, which you might want to get cleared.

Once you go for your prenatal visits, a range of tests would be suggested by your doctor. Some of them would be relatively simple blood tests and few could be more invasive ones. Before you proceed with these tests, you should ask your doctor to explain to you what are these tests, and the reasons for conducting them, and also the inference from these tests.

Tests in the first trimester would usually involve tests to determine levels of two proteins in your blood and an ultrasound scan known as nuchal translucency (NT) would be performed. This scan is usually performed between the 11th and 13th week of the pregnancy. The screening in the first trimester usually provides you with the information about the odds of your baby having Down Syndrome, even though this won’t exactly help you with the diagnosis but can surely detect the same.

Since now you are at the very beginning of your pregnancy, you might have a lot of questions in your mind since you will be experiencing a lot of changes both physically and emotionally. Hence, you must not hesitate to ask questions to your doctor. Ideally, you must try to jot down the points beforehand, so that once you are inside the chamber, you shall not skip out the important points due to nervousness. Please ensure that you do not miss any appointments.
