How to Know Which is the Right Infertility Treatment for You?

Infertility is the inability for a couple to conceive even after one year of trying to have a baby. Issues can be in the male as well as the female that causes delay in conception. In men, low sperm count, poor sperm movement, blocked sperm duct and misshaped sperm can make it difficult to get pregnant. While in women, blocked fallopian tubes, irregular ovulation, problem in cervix or uterus could be the problem.

Before infertility testing, the doctor will try to understand your sexual habits. He may suggest how to  improve your chance of getting pregnant. For instance, ovulation tracker which predicts the best days to have sex.

Fertility testing is separate for male and female. In males, fertility testing includes genetic testing , semen analysis, hormone testing , imaging etc.  While in females, fertility testing includes ovulation testing, hormone testing, imaging, ovarian testing etc.

Once the cause is determined, the treatment options are analyzed.

For women, treatment options can be one or more:

1. Stimulating ovulation with the help of fertility drugs

The main treatment to correct ovulation disorders is using fertility drugs. It regularizes ovulation and makes it easy for you to get pregnant.

2. Intrauterine insemination

The time when ovary releases one or more eggs, healthy sperm is placed directly in the uterus for fertilization to take place.

3. Surgery

Infertility can be caused due to conditions like endometrial polyps, uterine septum, some fibroids which can be treated with hysteroscopic  surgery.

For men, treatment options can be one or more:

1.Making changes in lifestyle factors

Regular exercise, right timing of sex, discontinuing medicines that can impair fertility, removing harmful substances are few lifestyle changes which can improve chances of getting pregnant.

2. Medications

In order to promote healthy sperm, certain medicines can increase testicular function which will increase sperm count and its quality.

3. Surgery

This option is considered in case of sperm blockage. The surgery can improve chances of pregnancy.

Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART)

IVF is the most common ART technique and is the best shot to treat infertility. In IVF cycle, eggs are extracted and fertilized with sperm to form the embryo. The embryo is transferred to the uterus and in 10-14 days a blood test is scheduled for to test pregnancy.

Its true that with advances in medicine and technology, there are many treatment options available to increase the chances of getting pregnant. With right diagnosis and best treatment given at the right time, you stand a good chance to end your struggle with infertility.
