Effective ways to boost thinking skills in your child

Team AckoFeb 8, 2024

5-year-olds are more mature now than their toddler days and can understand the world in a better way.  Their logical thinking and understanding capabilities have increased and as such, they are curious to know how things work around them.

Their language and communication skills have improved and most of the 5-year-olds can read and write a few lines. You would have observed by now that your not-so-little little one asks so many questions about everything and you sometimes get exhausted finding answers for them. Since his learning and grasping abilities have increased, it is important to engage the little one in plenty of age-appropriate games and activities, which will boost his thinking skills further.

Though there is no set strategy or method to boost thinking skills, the method you apply will depend upon your child. Here are some quick tips to boost the curious cat’s thinking skills in an effective way:

    1. Encourage him to ask questions

Let your child know that it is important to be CLEAR about anything that he is learning. If he hasn't understood something or is not clear about how things work, then he should feel free to ask questions. You can set an example by asking open-end questions to him while playing games or involving him in an activity, like ‘’How do you think this works?’’ ‘’Do you think this can be done differently?’’ ‘’Can you guess how the plants grow?’’

    2. Storytelling

Storytelling sharpens listening skills in children. As they listen to different stories, their minds start drawing a picture of the characters and their roles. They will start by connecting the flow of the characters from the beginning until the end of the story. It will also make them curious to think and guess what will happen at the end of the story. Similarly, you can encourage your child to tell stories about different topics. While he narrates and writes stories, his mind is thinking wide and exploring the creative reasoning side of his brain.

    3. Puzzles and memory games

Encourage your child to play more puzzles and memory games. There are different puzzle games available abundantly in the market, so make sure you choose age-appropriate games. These games will boost the cognitive and problem-solving skills of your kiddo.

    4. Role plays

Many schools have included role plays as part of their curriculum to encourage kids to enact and imitate a character. Dramatic plays will help your child with inhibitory control as they need to stay in the character. It will also make the little one more flexible and imaginative as the story blends into many twists and turns. He needs to remember the role of his character and also his partners, which will improve his memory power too.

Grandma’s Tip: As a parent, you can arrange for a simple role play at home involving all family members. Set-up a play as if you all are camping in a jungle or you are in the space with aliens, escaping from dinosaurs, playing superheroes, etc. This will pique your child’s interest and also boost his thinking skills.

    5. Socializing

Encourage your child to interact and talk freely and positively with people irrespective of the age. Socializing will boost his communication skills, which will make him more confident and stronger to understand the world outside and how things work. Based on the environment, his adaptation and thinking abilities will improve.

    6. DIY or arts & crafts

You can get your child to do some ‘Do It Yourself' or some interesting age-appropriate arts and crafts activities. It could be making his own pencil stand or making a dollhouse with carton box and play dough, making different models using origami or play dough, etc.

    7. Sports and games

Motivate your child to participate in indoor and outdoor sports, which will help with his overall development. Playing outdoor activities like football, baseball, basketball is all about building strategy and chasing the goal. There are many indoor games as well, which will help to improve his cognitive skills, such as chess, carom, cards, table tennis, etc.
