What is a Travel Insurance Policy in India?

Travel insurance is a type of insurance policy that protects you against a variety of financial emergencies while travelling abroad. For example, if your flight gets delayed, your trip is cancelled, or your baggage is lost, a travel insurance policy will provide financial coverage against such situations.

Travel Insurance policies will provide coverage for:

  • Hospitalisation due to illness/accident
  • Baggage loss or delayed check-in
  • Passport Lost/Theft
  • Flight delays/cancellations
  • Trip cancellation or rescheduling
  • Emergency trip extension and hotel stays
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation of mortal remains in case of death
  • Kidnap and hijack incidents lasting more than 24 hours
  • Personal liability and bail bond expenses
  • Loss of passport and financial emergency cash

In many countries, travel insurance is required for visa applications. Consequently, securing a valid visa and buying travel insurance from India are prerequisites for entry into these destinations.

How to Choose the Best Travel Insurance in India?

Choosing the best travel insurance depends on several key factors that match your travel habits and needs.

    1. Coverage Type: Check if the policy includes medical emergencies, flight delays, cancellations, baggage loss, and trip interruptions. The wider the coverage, the better your protection.
    2. Destination & Trip Duration: Domestic and international trips have different risks and requirements. Select a plan that suits your travel type and duration.
    3. Travel Frequency: Frequent flyers should opt for annual or multi-trip plans for convenience. For domestic travellers, it offers automatic protection across multiple flights for an entire year.
    4. Claim Process: Choose insurers with a quick, cashless, digital claim process. Hassle-free claims ensure peace of mind when things go wrong.
    5. Premium vs Benefits: Don’t pick a policy solely based on low premiums. Balance affordability with comprehensive coverage and clear terms.
    6. Exclusions: Carefully read what’s not covered—like pre-existing conditions or airline cancellations—to avoid surprises later.
    7. Reputation & Support: Choose a trusted insurer with a good claim settlement ratio and 24×7 assistance. Reliable support makes all the difference during emergencies.

When Should You Buy Travel Insurance?

It’s recommended to buy travel insurance at least 15 days before your trip. This gives you enough time to:

  • Compare available plans
  • Understand coverage and exclusions
  • Choose a policy that best suits your travel needs

Buying early also ensures you’re covered for any unforeseen issues that may arise before departure.

How to Compare Travel Insurance Online in India

Here are the key factors to consider when comparing the best travel insurance India online:

  1. Sum_insured.svg
    Sum Insured

When comparing travel insurance quotes, pay close attention to the 'sum insured,' the maximum amount of coverage. This vital information ensures that you have the necessary financial security for the trip. For instance, some countries will not give you a visa unless you can prove you have adequate coverage with your policy.

  2. Flexible_coverage.svg
    Range of Coverage

It is important to compare the levels of protection offered by different policies when buying travel insurance. Think about what kinds of protections you might need on your trip and budget accordingly. In this way, you can ensure that you have adequate coverage for your trip that is specific to your needs.

  3. Register_claim.svg
    Claim Procedure

Look into the claim process to understand how difficult or easy it can be to raise a claim. The easier the claim process, the better. Also, consider the Turnaround Time (TAT) for claim settlement, as faster settlements can offer added peace of mind during your travels.

  4. Claim settlement.svg
    Claim Settlement Terms

Claims are settled based on the applicable terms and conditions. Before choosing a travel insurance policy, take the time to understand the terms and conditions related to claim settlements. Knowing these terms in advance ensures you're well-prepared and informed about how claims are processed.

How is the Premium Calculated for Travel Insurance Plans?

The premium in travel insurance is the amount you pay to get coverage under your policy. Here are the most important factors affecting travel insurance premiums:

Parameters Affecting Travel Insurance PremiumsDescription

DestinationHigher-risk destinations or countries with expensive medical care carry higher premiums
Travel PeriodLonger travel durations often result in higher premiums due to extended coverage. Even extended coverage increases the overall premium.
AgeDifferent age groups may have varying premium rates. For instance, senior citizens who are at a higher risk of health problems end up paying a higher premium for a travel insurance policy.
Insured TravellersThe total premium increases with the number of travellers covered by the policy. Also, as the number of insured members in a family plan is higher, its premium is higher than that of an individual travel policy.
Add-onsThe premium may rise depending on the number of coverage options selected for the policy. The more add-ons you include in your policy, the higher the travel insurance premium is.The more add-ons you include in your policy, the higher your travel insurance premium will be.
Pre-existing ConditionsPre-existing medical conditions may lead to higher premiums. The specific medical condition will determine this. So, you should always disclose your medical conditions to the insurer.
DeductiblesA Deductible is the amount that the policyholder agrees to pay out of pocket. The higher the deductible, the lower the travel insurance premium.

*Note: Please note that these parameters are crucial to travel insurance premium calculations. These factors and the policyholder's coverage options determine the premium.

How to Lower Your Travel Insurance Premium

As a travel insurance buyer, you should aim to pay the lowest possible insurance premium to get maximum coverage. The following tips will help you reduce your travel insurance premium.

  1. Think about what you need for the trip and only buy the travel insurance that you will use. Avoid adding extras that you do not need because they can raise the premium. That way, you can save a lot of money.

  2. Check out the plans of different travel insurance companies and compare them. Look for deals and prices that are as good as the others.

  3. If you are going on a trip with family or friends, ask if you can get a discount if you all get insurance under the same policy. Some insurance companies do cover it. If your group meets the requirements, you can buy a single policy that covers everyone in the group.

  4. If you are a frequent traveller, you should opt for an annual policy. This will help you save on the overall premium amount.

  5. To pay lower premiums, you can agree to pay a certain amount out of your pocket, which is called a deductible.

  6. Booking travel insurance early can help you save on premiums. Insurers may offer lower premiums when you book early.
