Team AckoJan 17, 2024

Owning and riding a two-wheeler is a dream come true for every passionate bike enthusiast. For some, the dream bike might be a sports bike and for some, it might be a scooter; but the joy of zooming around the streets and highways on it is unparalleled. The sweet sound of a fresh, new, engine starting is music to the ears of a biker.

Things

The first time you lay your hands on a new bike’s accelerator is a moment to savor. There are so many firsts associated with a brand-new bike; first night ride, first road trip, first ride with your love interest, such a list is special.

Yes, riding a new bike can be overwhelming but one needs to keep calm and focus on the road ahead to ensure a smooth ride. Riding in India is a challenge due to pot-holed roads, pedestrians, traffic, construction activities adjoining the road, and of course fellow riders and drivers. Read ahead to know 7 things to keep in mind while riding your new bike.

#1 Practice makes perfect

You might have practiced a zillion times on your friend’s bike before purchasing your new bike. However, riding a new bike is a new experience. Even if you have practiced on the same model, there is a difference between an old bike and a new one. Do not ride your new bike on highways till the time you are not 100% comfortable with it. You can practice riding your new bike on service roads or in an open area to get your clutch-gear-brake-accelerator combinations right.

#2 Ensure the right posture

Maintain the right posture while riding your bike. Do not get into the habit of slouching or putting your body weight on your palms. Different bike models demand a different body posture. For example, a cruiser bike has a straight-back posture while a sports-bike has a slightly inclined-body posture. Figure out a way to be comfortable while riding your new bike without overworking any of your body’s muscles.

#3 Pick comfortable biking gear

Remember, comfort beats style when it comes to biking gear. You might wear the most stylish helmet but it will not serve the purpose if it is not sturdy enough to sustain a heavy blow. Therefore, one must buy ISI-approved helmets. You might want to try out a jacket, biker gloves and eyewear as well. Rising pollution levels in the city might prompt you to purchase a mask as well. If you plan to go on road trips, consider wearing shin pads, knee caps, etc.

#4 Adjust rear-view mirrors

Your bike’s rear-view mirrors act as a guide while riding on the road. Some like to get a full view of the vehicles coming from behind, and some want to view their bikes tail and the incoming vehicle in one frame so that they can make a proper judgement. Find out your right rear-view mirror setting and make sure to adjust it to it before starting the bike.

#5 Focus on indicators

First-time riders need to focus on the indicators of the vehicles in front to gauge that vehicles movement and ride accordingly. Similarly, one should also give proper indications while lane changing, turning, etc. Initially, spend a few seconds before getting on your bike to check if the indicator lights are functional or not.

#6 Follow the rules

Familiarize yourself with road rules before riding your new bike. Flyover routes, one-way signs, traffic signals on chowks, etc. can be confusing for those who aren’t familiar with riding on Indian roads. Follow the rules and cooperate with the traffic police if you are stopped by them.

#7 Bike servicing

Follow your bike servicing schedule to keep your two-wheeler in shape. Do not skip the servicing sessions as a new bike needs that to stay in optimal condition.
