9 Foods You Must Avoid When You Are Trying To Conceive

Eating right is the key to a healthy pregnancy and eating fruits, vegetables and cereals is always good in pregnancy. However, there are certain foods that must be avoided to give your fertility a much needed boost.

Foods that must be avoided when you are trying to conceive:

1. Trans Fat

Trans fat is found in chips, popcorn and fried food that must be avoided if you are trying to conceive. These foods causes hike in insulin and also inflammation that lowers down the fertility and excess can damage blood vessels as well. Men should also lower down the intake of trans fat as it lowers down the sperm production and affects fertility.

2. Alcohol

Alcohol is a biggest contributor to infertility and it should be avoided at any cost if you are trying to get pregnant. Alcohol depletes the vitamin B from the body that is necessary to boost the chances of fertility and fetus growth as well. So if you have to avoid it for the better health of you and your bay then there is no harm in it.

3. Unfiltered Water

There are lot of chemicals in the water that comes directly to your home. You need to drink filtered water that takes care of all these toxins and chemicals and gives you pure water. Unfiltered water takes away lot of essential salts from your body so it is necessary for you to drink filtered water during pregnancy.

4. High Sugar

Avoid consuming high sugar or carbs during pregnancy as this might lead to insulin hike in women and affects fertilization. High insulin impacts the ovaries that lessens down the chances of fertilization. This also affects the ovulation cycle that mars the fertility big time.

5. Soda

Soda or aerated drinks contains lot of toxins and chemicals that might increase the chances of infertility in women. These toxins leads to hormonal imbalance and infertility. They also take away all the nutrients from our body and our body do not get any nutrition that leads to fertility.

6. Raw Foods

Raw vegetables like sprouts, radish contain bacteria that might cause miscarriage or stop the growth of foetus. Same is the case with juices and canned vegetables that are full of bacteria and are not pasteurized. These foods should be avoided when you are trying to get pregnant.

7. Fish rich in mercury

Fish is indeed healthy as it is rich in omega-3 fatty acid but when you are trying to conceive then you must avoid eating it. Fish has high amount of mercury that is harmful for the body and lowers down your chances of getting pregnant. Restrict your fish diet to salmon, cod or shrimp in less quantity and avoid other type of fishes till your pregnancy is over.

8. Soy Products

Soy is rich in protein but if you are trying to get pregnant then you should avoid consuming soy products. Soy has certain compounds that affects fertility in men and women. These compounds are known to obstruct and destroy the sperm that swims towards the egg for fertilization. This reduces the chances of pregnancy in women.

9. Low Fat Dairy

Low fat dairy products like low fat milk, cheese, yogurt may contain androgens that are known to be male hormones. These products interferes with ovulation and delays pregnancy in women. High intake of low dairy products increase the risk of infertility whereas high fat dairy foods improves fertility by balancing the hormones in women.

Studies have also revealed that low fat milk products consumption during pregnancy increases the risk of asthma and hay fever in the unborn child.

Eat a Healthy Diet 

Eating a balanced diet full of fruits, veggies, lean proteins and whole grains can boost fertility. Foods high in antioxidants like berries, nuts and leafy greens help improve sperm and egg quality.

Exercise Regularly 

Regular exercise helps with weight management and reduces stress both of which are important for fertility. But don’t overdo it as it can harm reproductive health.

Take Prenatal Vitamins 

Prenatal vitamins especially those with folic acid are essential before and during pregnancy. Folic acid prevents birth defects and boosts fertility by promoting healthy ovulation.

Quit Smoking and Recreational Drugs 

Smoking and recreational drugs can reduce fertility in both men and women. Quitting these habits increases your chances of getting pregnant.

Stay Hydrated 

Drinking plenty of water is good for overall health including reproductive health. Staying hydrated helps balance reproductive hormones.

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is essential for hormonal balance and overall health. Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep per night to support fertility.
