What's ECDS & How Does it Affect Fertility?

Team AckoFeb 8, 2024

EDC’s are Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals, which are present everywhere, in food, products, air. It's difficult to eliminate them, but exposure to them can be minimized. One of the factors that can cause infertility in men and women are few chemicals. They impact both men and women’s reproductive health, thereby making it difficult to conceive.

So what do EDC’s do? How do they affect fertility? How can damage by them be minimized?

EDC’s:

-Bring changes in hormone levels

-Cause poor sperm and egg quality

-Cause damage to the genetic material( DNA) in sperm

-Cause menstrual cycles to last longer

-Increase the risk of miscarriage

-Cause early menopause

EDC’s can block male and female sex hormones. i.e testosterone and estrogen.

How to minimize the effects of EDCs?

The effects of EDC’s can be minimized by taking precaution. What can be done?

-Wash fruits and vegetables very well. This will remove pesticides, fungicides and other chemicals that have been sprayed on them.

-Drink water from glass or hard plastic bottles. Avoid soft plastic bottles.  EDC chemicals are used to make the plastics soft and flexible. These can mix with the drink and get into your system affecting fertility.

-EDC chemicals are used to make plastic wrappings, cling wrap and linings inside cans. Hence avoid usage of canned, processed and pre-packaged foods.

-Avoid usage of strong and heavily perfumed products as these contain chemicals.

-Keep your home airy and bring in fresh air by opening windows.

-While buying cosmetics, shampoos, conditioners, body washes and hair colouring, choose products that don’t contain parabens, a preservative used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products

-While buying food products, avoid those where additives, preservatives and anti-bacterial agents have been added. These are mentioned in the list of ingredients used.

-Avoid using products which emit strong concentrated smell like air fresheners, perfumed products, smoke and fumes.

-Try using green products which have non-toxic agents. Detergents, cleaning products, carpet cleaners, glues, varnishes contain all types of chemicals. Replace them with green products.

-Try using green chemicals which have non-toxic agents and are used to reduce pests and weeds. Pesticides and herbicides should be replaced by these green chemicals.

EDCs, the endocrine disruptors affect both male and female fertility. More the level of EDC in the body, less are the chances of conception. Unfortunately, EDC’s can’t be removed from our environment. It’s better to take the above precautions and prevent damage to your reproductive health.
