Goan Chonya Doce

Goan Chonya Doce is a set of Goan Christmas sweets. Though it requires intense stirring, the effort is worth the delicious flavour. Chana dal is a helpful source of zinc, folate, calcium, and protein.

Ingredients to make Goan Chonya Doce:

1 cup chana dal /split Bengal gram without skin, 1½ cup sugar, 1 cup fresh coconut (scraped only the white flesh), a pinch of salt, 6 pods green cardamom powdered, 1½ tbsp. ghee

Steps to make Goan Chonya Doce:

1. Wash and soak chana dal in enough water for 3 hours.

2. Pressure cook the chana dal until soft.

3. Grind the soft dal along with water to a fine, smooth and thick paste. You can use the channa boiled water if any for grinding.

4. Transfer this paste to a thick bottomed pan.

5. Grind the scraped coconut with very little water to a smooth thick paste.

6. Add the coconut paste, sugar and a pinch of salt to the chana dal paste.

7. Cook on medium heat; keep stirring continuously while on heat. Add cardamom powder and stir vigorously and continuously.

8. When the mixture starts thickening further, it will start slowly leaving the sides of the pan and you can see the bottom of the pan while stirring.

9. The mixture should start coming together to form a ball.

10. Add ghee and give it a good final stir. Transfer the contents to a well-greased tray and smoothen and shape either with a banana leaf or rolling pin to 1 cm thickness.

11. When it is warm, cut into desired shapes and sizes. After it is cooled, store in an airtight container.
