Hog Plum Gojju

Wondering how and what to do with these hog plums? This is an interesting recipe to try with these hog plums and entertain. Hog plums are rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, and iron.

Ingredients to make Hog Plum Gojju:

4-5 hog plum washed, peeled, cored and cut into small pieces, ¼ cup jaggery, salt to taste, ¼ tsp. turmeric powder

For gojju masala: 1 cup fresh Grated coconut, 1 tsp. chana dal, 2 tsp. urad dal, 2 tsp. sesame seeds, ¼ tsp. fenugreek seeds, 2-3 red chillies

For seasoning: 3 tbsp. coconut oil, 1 tsp. mustard seeds, ¼ tsp asafoetida, 6-7 curry leaves

Steps to make Hog Plum Gojju:

1. In a saucepan, bring water to brisk boil and add hog plum pieces, the seeds and jaggery and stir well, once it comes to boil simmer to low flame until the hog plums are soft.

2. Dry roast the chana dal, urad dal, fenugreek seeds and the red chillies until the red chillies are crisp and the dals turn golden colour. Add coconut to it and just sauté for about a minute. Dry roast the sesame seeds separately till they splutter. Grind them when it is cooled.

3. Add gojju masala ground paste and salt to cooked hog plum and mix well and bring to boil.

4. Reduce the heat and add a tablespoon of raw coconut oil and allow it to boil for another 10 minutes.

5. Heat oil in a tempering pan over medium heat add the mustard seeds to crackle and add the curry leaves and asafoetida and stir for a few seconds and pour them on the Hog Plum Gojju.

Serve them along with steamed rice topped with ghee for a delicious lunch or for breakfast along with idlis or dosas or for dinner.
