A serious illness in the family can derail everything, especially if you’re an unorganised worker living paycheck to paycheck. The West Bengal government understands this struggle and has introduced the Asangathit Karmakar Gambhir Bimari Chikitsa Sahayata Yojana to provide much-needed financial relief during medical emergencies. It offers financial assistance for the treatment of serious or critical illnesses for registered unorganised workers and their families.

A large portion of the workforce, especially in the unorganised sector, remains outside the reach of formal health insurance. Many do not have employer-provided coverage, cannot afford private insurance premiums, or are unaware of government health schemes. This creates a major vulnerability: when serious illness strikes, treatment often gets delayed or avoided entirely due to cost concerns. The Asangathit Karmakar Gambhir Bimari Chikitsa Sahayata Yojana plays an important role in bridging this healthcare gap.
For informal workers who don’t have access to health insurance, this scheme acts as a financial safety net. It directly supports high-cost treatments like cancer care, cardiac surgery, or dialysis, without needing to buy a health insurance policy.
Without financial support, many workers postpone or skip treatment entirely. Knowing that help is available encourages early diagnosis and timely intervention, which often leads to better health outcomes.
While other government schemes exist, not all unorganised workers qualify or are enrolled. This state-level initiative fills the coverage gaps, especially for those who get left out of national programs.
This scheme helps make healthcare more equal by making sure even those without a salaried job or formal insurance can get access to proper treatment and medical support. It gives unorganised workers the same chance to fight a critical illness as anyone else.
Facing a serious illness can be overwhelming, especially without a stable income or health insurance. The Asangathit Karmakar Gambhir Bimari Chikitsa Sahayata Yojana gives unorganised workers and their families a sense of security, knowing that support is available when it's needed the most.
