Providing technical guidance and assistance to other ministries, departments, state governments, etc., on statistical matters.
Participating in international statistical forums and organisations and fulfilling India's obligations under various international agreements and conventions on statistics.
Monitoring and evaluating the progress of various central sector schemes and projects in terms of physical and financial achievements.
Administering and overseeing the implementation of MPLADS scheme.
Developing and maintaining a web-based online system for project monitoring called Online Computerised Monitoring System (OCMS), which facilitates data entry, verification, analysis, reporting, etc., of various projects.
Some of the notable milestones of the ministry in terms of task execution are as follows.
Introducing a new base year (2011-12) for national income accounts in 2015.
Revising the consumer price index (CPI) series in 2015
Launching a new periodic labour force survey (PLFS) in 2017.
Adopting a new industrial classification system (NIC 2008) in 2017.
Implementing a new system for data dissemination called National Summary Data Page (NSDP) in 2018.
Conducting the seventh economic census in 2019-20.
The sources of official statistics in India can be broadly classified into three categories: administrative sources, surveys and censuses, and non-official sources.
Administrative sources: These refer to the data collected by various ministries, departments, agencies, etc., as part of their administrative functions, such as tax records, registration records, budget documents, etc.
