What is Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY)?

Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana is the full form of PMMVY. The meaning of these words loosely translate to the Prime Minister’s scheme for mother’s worship. The scheme was launched in the year 2017 to provide monetary compensation to pregnant women who have lost their job owing to the pregnancy. This scheme also aims to improve the nutrition quotient for pregnant women and lactating mothers.

Objectives of PMMVY:

An average Indian woman is considered under-nourished owing to limited access to food due to poverty. The government has always tried to introduce lucrative health schemes with an aim to provide at least basic nutrition to women and children. The PMMVY comes under the Women and Child Development Ministry of India.

  1. The objective of the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is to give partial compensation to pregnant women and lactating mothers who were working and had to experience a wage-loss due to the pregnancy.

  2. The period of pregnancy requires a woman to take additional nutrition to sustain the pregnancy and deliver a healthy child.

  3. The cash incentive provided with the help of three installments can be used to meet at least the daily requirement of nourishment solely for the use of pregnant women.

Key Benefits of PMMVY Scheme:

The following are the key benefits of the PMMVY scheme:

The Monetary Benefits

The following table lists scheme details related to the monetary benefits based on installment number as claimed by the beneficiary:

Installment NumberCriteriaIncentive
1Registration of the pregnancy should be done 150 days from the last menstrual date.Rs. 1000
2The claim should be raised around 180 days after the LMP.Rs. 2000
3A lactating mother can make a claim after child birth.Rs. 2000

Nutritional Needs

A pregnant woman and a lactating mother is in need of extra nutrients to be able to provide enough for the baby. She should consume at least 200 calories more than the daily requirement based on her height and weight.

The World Health Organization suggests that a newborn should be exclusively fed breast milk in the first 180 days of life. Adhering to this requirement needs a mother to consume enough nutrients herself first. Only then it will be possible to provide the required amount of nutrition to the baby.

The PMMVY scheme helps a woman take care of additional nutritional needs of herself and the baby.
