Chhattisgarh: An Overview

Chhattisgarh is a state that celebrates unique festivals that reflect its culture, tradition and heritage. Apart from the common festivals celebrated across the country, the state celebrates various festivals and fairs, which include Bastar Dussehra, Goncha Festival, Bhoramdeo Mahotsav and Champaran Mela. Typically, during these days, the majority of the public gets a day off to participate in the celebrations.

  • The Bastar Dussehra is a festival which dates back to the 17th century. It involves paying homage to the Goddess Danteshwari and other Gods of the tribes. The festival spans 15 days, and you can witness the art and culture of the state during the celebrations.

  • Goncha Festival is also called the Chariot Festival of Chhattisgarh. The highlight of this festival is a mock weapon built by the indigenous tribes. It is a pistol (Tukki) made from bamboo, and a fruit (Goncha) used as a bullet. The tribes celebrate by engaging in mock encounters.

  • The Bhoramdeo Mahotsav involves several cultural activities, and displays of Chhattisgarh’s indigenous tribes and their art forms and craft works. The festival gives you an insight into the state’s art and culture.

  • Champaran Mela is an annual fair, and the name of the fair comes from the place Champaran. The fair celebrates Saint Vallabhacharya, the reformer of the Vallabha community. People from all over the country participate in this fair, especially the Vaishnava community.
