Telangana: An Overview

Telangana is a state with rich culture, heritage and history. The state celebrates some unique festivals and fairs. Some of the prominent festivals in Telangana include Bathukamma Festival, Bonalu, Ganesh Chaturthi, Ramzan and Samakka Sarakka Jatara. The general public gets a day off during these festivals.

Bathukamma Festival is dedicated to Goddess Durga. It involves women arranging flowers in stacks to resemble the holy gopuram. They circle the gopuram and sing songs. The festival comes to an end after immersing the Bathukamma in a water body.
Bonalu is a popular festival in Hyderabad and Secunderabad. It involves the worship of Goddess Mahakali. Women prepare a meal comprising rice, milk and jaggery and offer it to Goddess Mahakali.
Ganesh Chaturthi is a popular festival across the country. It involves the installation of Ganesha idols in pandals. People from all communities get together to celebrate this festival. The festival ends with the immersion of Ganesha idols in a water body.
Ramzan is an important festival for the Muslim community in Telangana. It involves fasting during the holy month of Ramzan and preparing a feast on Eid. People also wear new clothes and visit family and friends.
